Nitrate level

Hi Guys,

Newbie has a question, tanks now been set up for four weeks. Have been testing Ammonia and Nitrite levels weekly (always below 1). I took a nitrate reading yesterday these we're the results;

20ml + 0ml = 5mg/I (Looked a bit like urine lol) 2nd of 5 colours in chart.


Is this level acceptable?. Also I have a bit of an algae problem could this be due to placement of the tank, tank faces a window. Also I leave the hood light on for approx 8Hrs a day.

nitrate is the end product from your nitrites and is also found in tap water usually. I suggest testing your tap water and seeing what you get from that. Once the ammonia goes to 0 and then the nitrite goes to 0, then your tank will be cycled.
