Hello,

I have an internal Juwel filter system in my tank and after reading some of the other topics I am wondering wether its a good or bad thing to renew the nitrate filter every 6 weeks, I am going to be restocking the live plants (as have had trouble getting any established)and I am lookig for some advice on whether the nitrate filter is taking any goodness out of the tank thats causing the plants to struggle.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

nitrate filter? never heard of it don't think it excists, Do you mean replacing the carbon in the filter every 6 weeks? If so dont bother not unless you are looking to get rid of meds or tannis.

the nitrate sponges are near on usless anyways. If planting i would remove it anyways and replace with a box of Cirax. It'll hold more bacteria.

Plants actually use nitrate as a source of nutrients, and if you are having plant issues, then that "nitrate filter" might be contributing to that. Other than that, take it out since it is unnecessary. You should be removing nitrate with your weekly water changes.

Most aquatic plants actually prefer to take up ammonia as their nitrogen source. Healthy plants will take up the ammonia and there will be less/none available to go through the cycle and hence little to no nitrate results.

Providing you do not have river-esque flows in your tank, some fast growing floating plants like Phyllanthus Fluitans I bought from "Voo" (which need quite intensive lighting) will readily use both nitrates and ammonia.
