Hi there,

As strange as it sounds I only recently got round to testing my tap water. I found it contains around 30-40mg/litre of nitragen.

now.... that seems rather bad to me, I mean its hardly worth doing water cycles!

I'm in walsall, westmids UK. Anyone else in the area can confirm my test?

Is this bad for fish/humans? Ok so it were only a broadrange easy test kit used to do the test but how inaccurate could it be??

i am assuming that you are talking about nitrates.

it is always a good idea to test your tap water before adding it to your tank. this may be just a fluke. i would wait a day and retest the water. while nitrates are toxins, the are the least harmful of the three. let the water stand for a day and retest. do you have plants in your tank? plants feed on nitrates. the faster growing of the plants require larger amounts of nitrates than slower growing ones.

when all else fails
don't sweat it!
some people go through life, never testing their tank water (i don't recomend this) but you see what i mean?
if your tap water can't be lowered much more with plants then your fish should adapt (if hearty)
i'm sure there are other people in your area with tanks and unless they are magic (or use bottled water or those store bought tubs of water  ) they have the same nitrate in their water
just don't overfeed and do regular water changes and you'll be alright ;)

oh and as for the harming of humans,
unless you where born in a little plastic bubble and ate only 100% sterile food from a 100% sterile plate, served by a 100% sterile robot... (you get the idea  )
then it shouldn't hurt you
hell i'm sure everyone has even eaten a bug sometime in their life!
its just a little protein
think of how many people drink your water....
are they dropping like flies? :dunno:
take it easy cowboy and don't worry yourself so much ;)

if their is something seriously wrong with your water i'm sure someone somewhere would have told you
if your that worried you can use a tap purifier, then boil the water, then let your camel take the first drink (hahahah sorry got a little carried away there)

oh har har, I'm the once who is drinking s*&t here :) it does lighten the mood tho. Can I let my cat take the first drink? I dont have a cemel

Having calmed down and retested and checked colours in daylight I've found it to be around 25-30mg/litre. Still seems bad tho. I've sent an email of enquiry to my local environmental health office to see what they think.

Yes I have plants and no effin wonder they grow so strong. In future I may have to do perhaps 40% weekly water changes tho. The way I see it, if my tank had 50mg per litre and the (so called fresh) water I'm diluting it with has 30mg per litre then I'm going to need more "fresh" water to get the tank level down.

Interesting fact for UK residents here.

The environmental heath office has replied to my enquiry. They say up to 50mg/litre of nitrates are allowed...... eeeuuuwww :dunno:

Hi, just had the same prob, my nitrates were reading upto 200, I bought a gravel Hoover on Friday and have done a water change and it has stabilized around 25-50. I also had a couple of weary looking plants that I have taken out.

I did reply to them saying, well when I had this tank from a chap in sutton I brought the water over with it. After a week of fish poop the tank still read 25mg/litre nitrates. Then a few weeks later since I've been doing water changes its up to 50/litre nitrates.

What is the lesson of this story? take some water from sutton coldfield, let some fish poop in it for a week and its still better than walsall water from the tap!
