Newbie Camera?

I am wanting to buy a camera to take up the hobby of photography. I have never had an SLR camera so wanted some opinions. I'm looking to spend around £400. I was looking at the Cannon EOS 1000D or the Nikon D3000. Which one should I go for, or do you have a suggestion within the same price range?

just been having a read up
on these cameras and they
are very close but i must
admit that i have owned
a canon in the past and
i still say that it looks the better
choice out of the two but the choice
is yours

In my experience you can't go wrong with either brand. I'm currently using the Canon EOS50D and it's excellent, but spending £400 with either manfacturer should casue you no concerns.

Canon EOS 100D gets my vote, its an excellent camera

All camera i have had always take blurry pictures! It really annoys me. I want something which will give me good quality pics to get into photography! Something to boost me into really wanting to do it!

If i remember rightly the 1000D is the model before Live View kicks in. If possible i would try and get a camera with Live View for those moments when looking through the view finder isn't all that practical

I am a real noob. I want something cheap incase i don't enjoy it! Something easy to work and get used to all the tech mumbojumbo

That being the case, I would recommend you checking out the older, but always superb, Nikon D50.

It's considered to be an entry level DSLR and is robust enough to take a lot of punishment and is fully of automatic controls so that you can pick and choose what you want, without having the hassle of having to sort it all out manually (although, that is an option too!).

The best thing is, you can pick them up for peanuts now adays on eBay, along with lenses and others bits for under £200.

They hold their value as well, so if you didn't get on with the whole DSLR thing you could always resell and get your money back.

+1 on the D50

As stated, either Nikon or Canon will serve you well. One piece of advice I have though, is to get yourself down to an electrical retailer and handle the bodies in your price range.

A camera might look better on paper, but that dosent automatically make it the best choice.

What exactly is it you want from your new camera?.

As ask because most DSLR's come with a standard lens (mainly 80mm). To get a full range of zoom options you will be looking at spending quite a bit of money on different lenses.
If you aren't 100% sure you would take to a DSLR you might be better looking in to buying a bridge camera. My own bridge camera is the Panasonic Lumix FZ28 and Here is a link to my Flickr page to show what sort of pictures you can easily (it must be easy if i manged it ), take with it.

As you can see they cost a lot less then a DSLR and they have a lot of the options and menu's that more advanced DSLR's have.

The only disadvantage with the D40 is that it dosent have a built in AF motor, which means that if the lens dosent have one built in, your only option is to manual focus.

D40s are actually quite a tricky model of camera, in as much that you are very limited on your lens choice and unlike the Nikon D50/D300/D2/D2X etc etc - with which you have a very wide choice of lenses.

I dont know about being very limited, according to Wiki, theres still plently of lenses to choose from. Just be aware of what will and what wont Auto Focus when it comes to buying new lenses.

If you're in any doubt, just pop into Jessops or a specialist photography shop and ask them if you can have a play.
