My parents thought that they wouldn't be able to have children and had pretty much given up hope until I came along and surprised them. My mum wasn't willing to go through a lot of treatments though to provide me with a sibling, hence I'm an only child.
When I was younger, my parents didn't have a huge amount of money, so I would get what I was given and be happy with it. They were also very strict on me so that I wouldn't grow up the spoiled kid. I look at my younger cousins these days and they get away with a lot more than I ever did.
At times growing up, I didn't like being an only child as it meant that I didn't always have someone to play with. My best friend lived next door to me, but if she was out then I was kinda stuck for something to do.
Looking back on it now though, I appreciate having been an only child. My parents were able to spend a lot more time with me educating me and doing things with me, and once I was a bit older and my parents had a bit more money, I had the opportunity to do a lot of different clubs, which I may not have been able to do if I'd had a sibling.
Then when I started university, my parents were able to buy me a flat that I now live in that's 10 minutes walk from the campus. If I'd had a sibling, they wouldn't have been able to buy us both a flat, and so I would have been in a different situation.
I don't know if that counts as being selfish, but I appreciate the benefits of being an only child now
