hi guys,

im looking for some info on what fish i can have together in my tropical tank, i have a 4ft tank been on a week all running so now i need to see what fish i can have together im thinking about neons and a few sharks, can anyone give me any other pointers on what fish i can mix with them?

thanks

Hi, dont forget that your tank will be far from cycled yet and is no where near ready for fish yet.

Have you added any mature media or an ammonia source to your tank? If not, it won't be 'cycled' and so won't be ready for fish yet.

Are you talking sliver sharks or rainbow/red tailed sharks? A four foot tank is not big enough for silvers and the other types can only be kept as individuals in a tank that size.

Sorry to 'rain on your parade', so to speak, but it's better, IMO, to mention these things now before you get yourself in a whole world of trouble!

no plant life yet thats tomorrow im getting that, how long tdo you think i should leave it after putting my plants in?

red tail sharks im thinking

wait for your tank to cyle properly and add the right media ect but i think its a bad idea adding neons with a red tailed black shark as they will get eaten i think lol, it al depends on what type of fish you want to keep as they all have different requirements for example water temp ect im fairly new to fish keeping but have learnt quite alot in the past 6 months so if u have any questions dont hesitate to message me

ok i will get my plants sorted then leave it another week or so thanks for the info guys. while the topic is here though theres a few fish im wanting but i dont know if i can have them all together or what i can have with which fish without there being serial killings haha

i like the following fish

siamese fighters
pleco
guppi
neon
red tail black shark
guami (if thats how you spell it)

Plants won't cycle your tank. You need to add ammonia so that the bacteria which will keep your fish healthy can feed and grow. There's a brilliant guide as to how you cycle your tank in the beginners resource centre.

I would strongly advise against adding fish until you have read and followed the guide.

unless you have cycled your tank then you are a good few weeks from adding fish yet, maybe around 4-6 weeks before you can think about adding fish, plus you need to get a test kit too to cheek the ammonia levels

Read the beginners resource section linked in my signature, specifically cycling of a filter of you will just end up with dead fish and wasted money.

If you have'nt already buy a test kit and i would advise adding an ammonia source, dont let your fish be the source by adding them to mature the tank, it may take longer but is the safest way to get a tank up and running and cheapest too. What types of pleco you mean, bristlenose would be fine in your tank but plecos will far out grow yours, red tail black sharks get very aggressive as they get older so think wisely on tank mates and as past comments say only 1 per tank. What tyoe of gourami do you like? And would be careful of a siamese fighter with an aggressive red tail shark.

hiya,

best thing you can do is to ensure your tank is properly cycled and all parameters are good as advised above. the great thing about fishless cycling is that it gives you plenty time to research all the fish you might fancy putting in your tank. you have to take into consideration water parameters, temp, compatibility etc, so there really is a lot of research to be done!! come up with a list of what you think would work and post it up here. we will all be happy to advise you. a test kit is really a great thing to purchase and you will get one quite cheaply off ebay etc (try and get a liquid test, not strips...they are really unreliable!!) the more info you can give us all the better!! i too will add you as a friend and if there is anything you want to ask that you don't want to post on the forum, feel free to pm me. good luck and happy researching!

L :good:

^^^ +1. yeah, cycle and research. there is much to be learned. It is better to learn before you buy so you do not waste your money.

well i have the ph test kit here so im going to give it a go and get back to you guys with my results

guppies and fighters might not mix to well... im unsure though
