Hey all. Have been looking into doing a marine tank for a few weeks now, doing a lot of reading a whatnot. But i have a few questions. First and foremost would this here tank be ok for keeping marines in? What i plan on doing is just going FOWLR for a while until i get the hang of things then going to take the lid off and get a pedant halide light system fitted, to have corals etc. Anyway is that tank going to be ok to start with?

Thanks in advance

P.S Wow i ramble on!

Hi Mike

Welcome to the Marine World

That tank is 50US G so I think about 40 ish UK G

If you are going to spend a bit of cash on a new tank that size I personally would be inclined to have a lookie on ebay for a slightly bigger tank (say 70UKg)

Saying that a 40g is OK but it will limit your stocking capacity

:good:

my first marine tank was 155 litres, which i still have running, that size of tank is ok for a beginer but the addiction soon takes hold.

id think to the future and get a bigger tank now save you having to fork out twice for the upgrades you would need for a bigger tank.

The only negative I have is in the future, lighting could be problematic for a tank that size.

You will be limited on your choices for lighting. It is too large for one halide to cover easily, yet on the smallish side for a pair.

The same troubles will arise with flourescent also. You will be just shy of getting the larger more efficient tubes in there.

I would say the choices are; go a little smaller and meke it possible to upgrade lghting and such sooner, as it would be cheaper,...or my favorite choice, go a lattle larger, and save yourself the pain of having to upgrade to a larger tank.

The second choice has the additional benefit of being allowed to reach a great level of maturity by the time you wish to advance to a full grown reef tank.

Thanks everyone, but i dont think i can go much bigger than 100cm. Plus i am a bit unsure as to what my second floor bedroom floor could handle over such a small area.
