New To Saltwater

Looks like you're off to a good slow start. Hoping it keeps going well for you :)

Well...it's been over a month since my last post, and not much has happened until this week. I've been waiting on a decision on what to do about a QT, and some lighting issues.

I'm having a guy build me a canopy and will retrofit the 6x54W T5 fixture I purchased about a month ago from a local reefer. Soon as I get those up and running, another friend has a pom-pom xenia and baseball size frogspawn that he is holding for me. I've also solved my QT issue (more on that in a min).

So lots of things happened over the course of this week. First off, I got 2 new pieces of equipment:

First, my very own RO/DI system. Complete with dual in-line TDS meters.

Next...some new bulbs to put in my fixture when I get it retrofitted into my canopy.

NOW...onto the QT issue. I bot this little jewel....

14 gallon Biocube, complete with everything, including the 10 lbs or so of liverock. Gonna be difficult to not turn this into a nano reef, but here's my INTENTIONS are for this little jewel to be my quarantine tank. Have something that looks a little nicer than just a bare tank sitting around. With the added bonus that once my display tank is full I can turn it into a nano reef someday.

Hope to have some recent pictures of my tank up for you tomorrow.

Had a really bad day today. Water on the floor 4 times....anyway, as promised...here's some updated pics.

Enjoy!!

Another dead Turbo. Guess all those star polyps he ate finally caught up with him. All water parameters in check.

Yeah...two new members of the family. Devil's hand and Colt corals....got them in my Biocube with the better lighting. Super excited....met another great local reefkeeper. All in all a good night.

If they come out tomorrow I'll try to post some pics tomorrow night.

Nice little journal you've got here and will definately be using it as a guide for my 55 gallon reef tank I'm setting up in a couple of months! :good:

Thank you Grayscale, and absolutely feel free to refer to it. I've picked up a TON of knowledge from Steph (~Nemo~) and some local people that I haven't included in my journal because it really has been just a flood of information for me and I guess the best way to say it is I've just been lazy getting all of that in there.

I am more than happy to pass on the things I've learned, so if you don't see an answer already in the thread or any of the others, please feel free to ask away. If I can't answer it, I'm sure someone on here can.

Thanks I appreciate it but I'd rather not hijack your journal since I will be starting my own. :D no parts purchased for mine yet but I've been planning for 6 months and I'll finally have the space when I move in April. Look forward to seeing more progress on yours, I love the scape. It's unfortunate for the loses but you did everything you could to prevent them and that's all you can do.
I might have missed it but did you get the clown fish sorted out?

Gotta say that doesn't sound at all like a Turbo genus snail or even the other common Turbinids I'm familiar with...they shouldn't munch corals of any sort. They can trample things a bit sometimes, but shouldn't actually eat anything but algae, diatoms, and other films. Did you catch it in the act of polyp-eating, and if so are you sure it was a Turbinid?

Donya-I can't be positive, but it certainly looks like every turbo I could find. I know that it is HIGHLY unusual for this to be happening, but I did actually catch him in the act. I can't explain it either, and you may be right, it may be a different family of snail. The fact of the matter is that he's no longer with us, so although it sounds sort of insensitive, I guess it's problem solved.

Grayscale, I appreciate the consideration for not hijacking my thread, not that it is a big deal to me. Certainly you're going to want to start your own journal anyway as it is pretty fun to look back at where you came from and compare that to where you are. I guess more than anything is was to offer to answer any questions you might have if I can, and let you know that you are more than welcome to PM me.

Would you happen have a photo of the shell of the culprit? If it's a Turbinid, it might have been a response to starvation, but it would still be the first case I've heard from any of those species.

Donya, there's actually a picture of it on Page 3 of the thread. A few posts from the top, 3 pictures of snails. The culprit is the snail in the bottom photo, the one that is on the intake of the HOB filter I used to have in my tank.

Also, just for reference, here's the before and after photos of the star polyp area.

This guy hung out in that indentation in the rock area for over a day and the after pic is what was left.
