New To Saltwater

Mmmmmm, nitrates the same before and after water change and retested by lfs..............

Have you tested the RO water before it goes in the tank?

Seffie-

I didn't test the nitrates in the water change night before last because I had already dumped it in not really thinking about it. I certainly will in the future.

I did have some water left over from the Sunday change that I didn't realize I had, so I went ahead and tested it and it tested around 5 ppm nitrates

Which makes me angry.....I should know better....the water that I tested was picked up weekend before last so if they have dirty filter/membranes and didn't change them, it might have been higher on the water that went in Wed. night (10 days later).

Gonna talk to a couple of the local guys and see if I can buy RO from them for a water change just to see if I can affect this at all. Also have a couple of other locations that I've recently found in town that sell RO.

Maybe for Christmas I'll get my own RO unit.

On a good note.....I bought this:

Be here middle of next week! Hoping that will help with this nitrates problem as well.

Hey folks!

Well a couple of good news items from last night.

First, I did yet another 25% water change....only this time I did it with water that I KNOW had zero niTRATes in it. Nitrate levels in tank went from 20<40 to 10<20, so we've made some progress. Very happy. Skimmer should be here tomorrow.

Second, we added a couple of oscellaris clowns (which my daughter has lovingly named Nemo and Marlin of course.)

Sorry for the flash in the picture...it's the best picture I could get.

Two cuties :good: don't forget to add them to the Fish of the week thread for clowns :good:

Well, rough day yesterday. The skimmer I ordered was broken in shipping so I'm working with the guy to get it replaced/refunded, whatever.

Lost one of my clowns last night after lights out. I could tell he wasn't feeling well, and I hadn't seen him eat since I put him in there. Chatted with Steph and tried several different things to no avail.

Water stats are spot on, so I don't think that is the issue....especially since I couldn't get him to eat and he was breathing heavily when I got home from work.

Anyway, was kind of a bummer day, but today is a new day and we'll see where we go from here.

Aww i'm sorry to hear you lost him... There was obviously not something right with him to begin with. Speak with your LFS and see if they can get you another one, as it was not your fault.

Skimmer is all sorted out. Guy is going to send me a brand new one in the box for the difference in price, which is still at least 20% or so cheaper than I've found elsewhere(one site has it for double what I'm paying). Assuming he gets his refund from UPS I get to keep the broken one for parts...pump alone is worth it and I still may try to fix it.

GREAT guy. He told me he has over 3,000 items for sale, and I can't complain a bit about his prices. He's been VERY responsive, and part of his business is maintaining saltwater tanks so he is very knowledgeable.

Anyway, sorry to gush about the guy, it's just been a very favorable experience so I thought I'd share. So, new skimmer should be here no later than Wed. next week.

Water stats holding steady so shouldn't be an issue to wait it out. See if I can replace the clown this weekend. Supposed to get some frags tonight....that should be pretty fun.

Sorry about the clown Yuma

But fantastic news on the skimmer - don't be afraid to name this good guy :good:

Been fairly slow going so I haven't updated in a while, but several things happened yesterday so it's time for an update.

Water stats holding steady.
8.1 PH
0 Ammonia
0 Nitrites
20 Nitrates (this will come down with next water change)

Got my new Eshopps PSK-100H skimmer in last night. Had a little trouble with it last night (my own fault) but it's running in a bucket of vinegar water right now and will go in the tank after bit. Here's a pic of it in action:

Second, I got a new coral last night. Finally got my little Kenya Tree. Here it is:

And finally....added another 8.5 lbs of live rock to fill in some of the gaps I had so here's a current FTS:

Gonna be gone a week leaving my tank to my brother in law. Hopefully everything will still be alive when I get home.

WOW...it's been a while since I posted an update with being out of town for Thanksgiving and a crazy week after that, but here goes:

Skimmer been giving me fits last week or so but I'm hoping with a good cleaning this weekend it will get sorted out.

Water stats holding steady, niTRATes staying at or below 20 so all good there. Everything else remains unchanged.

Today, I added 3 new corals to my tank. They all 3 opened to some degree almost right away. They look even better now than they do in the pics.

So, for your enjoyment, here are some photos:
