New To Fishies - Can I Put These 4 Types Together?

From your description of a splish and spalsh tank I am wondering if your in Australia (its a brand I have commonly seen here), if you are in Australia not many pet shops do carry Endlers but you can find them on a couple of Australian fish forums where people are selling them, that's how I ended up with my Endlers. I do love my Endlers and they can work well with a Siamese fighter.

In your tank another good option would be cherry shrimp, they are pretty, and hardy, at pet shops your generally looking at paying $4-$5 each but online on forums they are often available at 50c- $1 each. Cherry shrimp often will live well with fighters as well, it really depends on the temperment of the fighter.

Another good fish option for your tank if you did get out of having guppies are Killifish, beautiful colourful little fish that are suited to small areas.

Thank you Baccus. I am indeed in Australia. Just looked up a photo of Killifish, they really are gorgeous. At the moment I am considering all these options. I don't think I'm a shrimp person...they remind me of bugs (sorry shrimp lovers!) and I have a bit of a bug phobia I'll just keep researching for the moment. Feeling a bit guilty about giving away all the guppies since the lady who gave me the tank kept and loved them for a few years...but maybe the guilt will subside in time!

A shame you don't like shrimp, they are great little creatures, some types of snail are nice and Australia does have some really nice native snails but they can be hard to track down. If any snails do interest you I would reccomend checking out Aquagreen they post anywhere in Australia, who knows the shrimp on there might also appeal to you.
Don't feel too bad about the guppies they can become a real pest with the females costantly dropping fry and the males trying to breed with everything remotely fish like. Don't get me wrong I do have a soft spot for Guppies but they aren't the ideal fish for every body.
Another fish that you might find easier to track down (depending which part of Australia your in) would be sparkling Gouramis, a very pretty little fish that wont breed like crazy.

I was considering adding a snail at some stage, I think I'd like the variety and snails are pretty cute. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Aquagreen.

Re: guppies, I've given them all away to a pet shop except for 2 of the males, so hopefully that's the over-breeding sorted Sadly, they're a pale brown/yellow colour, not colourful like the guppies you see in the pictures online. I'm fantasizing about replacing them with some more colourful ones but feel bad to be so superficial and give these ones away just like that haha. I've added sparkling Gouramis to the list of fishies to look into.

I realise that a 10 gallon tank would be better, but given I've never kept fish before, I'd like to see how I go with this one before investing lots of money into a completely new set up. So for the moment, I'm just trying to learn a bit about water chemistry and tank maintenance...and if I keep enjoying it/the fishies survive, I will gladly get a bigger tank

Believe me, keeping fish in very small tanks is a lot harder than in large tanks. That means keeping any at all, let alone keeping them well!

Yeah, I've heard/read this! What I meant was, I want to give it a bit of time and see how diligent I am with water changes, cleaning, etc + time to do more research before I invest a lot more money. And since I got this tank + the fishies in it for free, I may as well keep it for now But it's gotten me thinking about bigger and better things!

Another suggestion... why not invest in a bigger tank? Maybe from freecycle or ebay if you want a cheaper option. Then you could transfer your existing lot in there more or less right away if you moved your existing filter to carry the bioload and add a new larger filter which would cycle quickly since you'd be running the cycled filter at the same time. Then... once the entire lot has adjusted you'd be able to slowly buy more of the fish you dream about.

I've been thinking about this more and more. I am a bit limited with space since am keeping the tank at work, but I think I can get a tank that's at least a big bigger. Think this is what I'll end up doing pretty soon. After all the reading I've done this week, all I can think about is all the fishies I want to have and can't have in this tank!!
