so at my senior bash i won a gift certificate for two bettas as a door prize. i was very excited and went and picked them out. one of them is donig great. the other is not donig so well. he is a great looknig red fish but since yesterday when i got him his color is starting to fade and he is getting these black spots on the ends of his scales. i tried to take pics of them. sorry not the best. also he isnt eating much of anyting and seems to be darting around his little tank. What is wrong with him or is he just stressed from moving. anything i can do to help him?

He's lovely.

I'm not really sure what it could be if it is something. One of my girls was all peach colored and then a few specs here and there appeared, but I believe it's just some more color coming in.

And they tend to loose some color if they're stressed. I stick mine next to a mirror and his head will turn from a dull brown to a black.

There are some disease links up top. Way up thur specifically for bettas.

Good luck with your babeahs.

what a sad little face...I hope he will be OK...fingers crossed. :S

Could you please give stats on: ammonia, pH, nitrate, nitrite etc. tank size, any tank mates, cleaning frequency, what additives you put in the water (ie. Aquaclear, Blackwater Extract), and any other relevant info on your bettas and thier environments. It could help a lot in diagnosis. Thanks!

Anyways, black patches can be caused by ammonia poisoning, which might also explain paleness - is his breathing at all labored? Depending on how often they are cleaned and how your water stats check out, some simple water changes could cure this. However, could you perhaps first turn the lights off and shine a flashlight on the afflicted fish? If the black patches look sprinkled with gold dust, you may have velvet - fairly common to pet store bettas - which can be treated with the appropriate medications.

Though, I must say, aside from some pallour, he doesn't look half bad ^^

Just to clarify - the two are kept separately, yes?
