Well, today after pacing around the pet/mostly fish store for about 20 minutes and staring at the cories in one of the tanks for 5 minutes, I gave in..I got my first cory! :D It's a Julii Cory and I'm going to name him, The Fonz!

I have read around and you all are saying they like to have friends and such. Well will he be okie for a while without one? I mean I get my fish in the next town because the closest thing to me is Wal Mart and I dont wanna get my fish there  . So I'm not sure when I will be back in Easton with my Dad so it might be a while before he gets a little companion. Will he be alright?

Also, being a newcomer..Is there anything about these guys I need to know? Other then dont put salt in the water ofcourse :p . But any pointers? Secrets? TIPS?! :shifty: :fun:

Well thats about it, thanks!!! ^_^

i have a afew of those, cute guys!

when i first started keeping fish i bought only one julie cory and it seemed to be happy but after doing some research i bought 3 more, 2 panda, 1 julie bringing me up to 4 in total

the original went crazy! he (i think) was barbelling them and swimming around them like nuts, so being a group is the best for them , they really seem to enjoy the company of each other.

mine tend to pair off but very cute

the only thing to watch with these guys is salt as you mentioned and they do enjoy a smaller substrate, sand being the best for them as they can dig and search for food rather easily in this material

good luck with your new addition and i hope you can get him a few friends soon!

you'll notice that all alone, he won't be real active. they really do do better in groups.
i've also noticed that mine tend to pair off. the two what i think are female pandas hang out, the two what i believe are males hang out, and the spotted cory, even though he's three times their size, hangs out with any of them.

I got my Cories specifically for sand maintainence, they are forever snuffling around in the sand, constantly turning it over.

Cute little guys too :D

Alright!! I talked to my parents about getting a couple more and they dont mind. My mo is all excited i think o.o. She says i need a little fish with my fish furniture  .

You say sand?! Hmm..the gravel I have is pretty large..will this be okay or will he starve to death with lack of getting to food? :-(

Oh! Another question, I seem to have this hair like green algae growing alot now
-_-. Will he eat that?

Thanks for all your help!!

He'll be ok, but they do prefer sand.

The hair-like algae can be controlled with barley straw tablets. Talk to your LFS.

Hi lilhurleybunny :)

I'm so glad that you got a cory and will soon be getting more. I just know you'll love them as much as I do

Corys are most active in the evenings and nights. Their eyesight is poor and they appreciate having a cave or some low plants so that can get out of the bright lights and into the shade. B)

The single most important thing to do when you have corys is to make sure that the water is always clean and the gravel is vacuumed. But, I know that you have a siphon and will be doing that. :D

Thanks Inch! Yes, I do have a siphon :p . However im still alittle confused about the whole use..it just doesnt seem to suck when i put it in the tank! :dunno:

Anywayy, Fonz seems to be doing good for now..he likes that cave i built a while back and I'm considering making some at my pottery class since everything there seems to be water proof :shifty: . Right now he's swimming all around the sides of the tank..I can't wait to get him a little friend! I hope It's soon  .

Thanks Sir Minion, I'll look into getting some of those tablets next time im at the LFS or Wal Mart!

Thanks Guys!!
Any other tips are welcome  !

hehe i hav 8 of these little guys, 2 peppered, 3 albino, and 3 bronze,

i call the 3 albino's the three amigo's
like wise for the 3 bronze
and the two peppered i call 'the elders' because iv had them the longets...

the two groups of 3 amigo's always take one end of my sand tank and go along it in a line turning my sand up (an showering anythin an everythin in the way with sand, including my crab) and the two elders sit on my bogwood an watch them :D

defo funny critters :D

With the siphon, you put it in the gravel. I have to suck the end of the tube to get the water flowing out but I'm sure to take my mouth away before the dirty water reaches the end. . hth

If you glaze your pottery caves make sure the glaze is lead, aluminum & cadmium free.

Many glazes are pigmented using these metals and they will kill your fish.

as said before, they will be much, much happier with friends. Mine love algae wafers and shrimp pellets.

Thanks for that Sir!! I didn't even know that..you enlightened me  .

Thanks everyone esle for the tips and posts!! Hopefully tommarow night im going to be getting him a little friend..and maybe an otto since i am now covered with algea  .

However, the place where I'm getting the fish might be Petsmart since i have to pick up a few things anyway..I know I know..it's not my LFS but its the only available thing at the moment! Don't worry i'm going to watch them for a while, checking for ich etc..etc..etc.. If none of the guys are acceptble Fonz is just going to have to wait!

Thanks again everyone!
