Hello I am going to buy my first betta fish tommorow I have bought a 19 litre tank and cleaned it 5 times It is an expensive tank with a filter, heater and light. I have gravel, plants and decoration which has been washed extensively. I have had the tank filtering for about 4 days the water has been conditioned and is very clear. I have purchased dried blood worms, tropical fish flakes and brine shrimp for the betta fish. I was wondering if this is all okay to look after a betta fish. Also what other fish are okay to have in the same tank as a betta.
Thankyou,
Elliott

Sounds good. Jzt make sure that the current is not so strong for the fish. I read a lot about strong filters harming your betta. As long as the decorations are not rough [that might tear his fins] then its all good. I heard blood worms should only be given as a treat, not as regular food. They also contain parasites that ur fish wont be able to handle. hmm, what else? Do u have a heater? They are tropicsl fish, they need warm water [about 78 degreed F]. Make sure the tank has a lot of hiding places [logs, holes, etc] Its good for the fish to roam around and play. =].
I would also recommend u to buy an emergency kit. I didnt do that when I bought mine =/. He died jzt recently cuz I didnt have medication for him.
Enjoy ur fish!HOpe I helped.

The tank will be still cycling sorry and will not be ready for your fish yet ... if you put him in theres a very good chance he could get sick and die :(
Most people will recommend getting some Household ammonia and a water testing kit so you can start cycling your filter :)

take a look at some of the links on cycling in this forum here : Beginners Resource Center

Don't overfeed him when you get him, they don't need very much food and can become constipated. You have to cycle your tank longer! As far as tank mates, it's trial and error. I have a male and female betta in my 140g with other community fish but I don't know if it's a good idea in a smaller tank. Other fish will like to nip at those lovely fins.

if u muzt cycle the tank longer..... do u do it bcz it is new or bcz u must do so with new water changes?
How should I change the fish tank water, then?

I received a 30l tank for xmas last year, and as the word "Novice" is stretching it for me, detailed instruction (with pictures), written by the SIL (who is a fish guru) about which fish to stock. Following her advice I now have some tetras (she said cardinals but I actually have neon's) in the tank with my beta, with no problems (I started off by having the beta in a "mini tank" inside the tank to allow him to get use to the company). I only have a small tank, but have made sure there are plenty of fin safe hiding places. Good luck and happy betta shopping :)

Doing water changes in the beginning of a cycle will deal with ammonia and nitrite/nitrate spikes. It's not safe for fish because of these spikes. Adding starter bacteria will help and frequent water testing will let you know if there are any issues. The tank has to be cycled longer because a biological filter is still trying to establish itself and this takes up to 6 weeks, sometimes longer. Once the tank is established, weekly water changes between 25-50% are a very good idea. It's all about good water. If your water is balanced, you will have great success with your fish.
