Hi

I had a 45L Freshwater tank bought a F8 Puffer and turned it in to brackish.
I have now bought him a 100L tank and it is coming this week.

My Question is what is the quickest way to cycle the new tank before i put puffy in?
Should i start it off freshwater for a couple of weeks and then put some minos in to speed it up then take them out n turn it brackish? Or should i just start it as brackish from day one?

How Long will it take before he can go in?

Kind Regds

I would just move the filter and filter media from your old tank over to the new tank and start it as freshwater. This will almost eliminate the whole cycle process. You can acclimate the puff in right away. The fig 8 will be ok in freshwater for a month while you get the sg up. Every week you can raise the sg by .002 but no more or it will kill the filter. Any other questions let me know!!

Hi Thanks for your reply but the only problem with that is i have turned his old tank brackish already so that will be putting him back in to freswater. Also when i put his filter etc in to the new tank what will he use in the old tank.

If you have a brackish tank already...Just duplicate the same sg and move the filter over. By moving the filter over you are skipping the cycle process, and the puffer can be added immediately. No Need To Cycle If You Move The Filter Over~!!!!

Yes and No to the above post.

Yes start the new tank up as Brackish as that is what you already have, but me persnally id take all the water from my current tank and put it in the new one, then top it up with a fresh brackish mix (just as if you were doing a water change)

One thing to remember, try not to take your Puffer out of the water as its when they gulp air that casues them problems from what ive read.

Great thanks darkentry i will give the tank a good clean tonight and put some water in it to check it is all okay. There is another filter in the tank that came with it and i am planning on running 2 filters the one he has now and the one in the second hand tank as it is a built in one. will it be okay to run this one as it has no bacteria built up in it?

yes totally fine as the bacteria in the current filter will support your fish until the new one catches up. If its 2nd hand id boil all the pads first though (paranoid) then use them,

on a side note.....darkentry????? lmao....dear god please no

hi
im not sure what the new filter is. it is built in and runs across the the back of the tank. it has like 3 sections. 1 section has cotton wool type stuff the 2nd has a net bag with like carbon pellets in and the 3rd is like these white chalk beads in a net bag. can i still boil them? they have not been used for over a year. im going to try and get new ones at the weekend but have not seen them before.
