I have ordered a new 60 gallon to set up an mbuna aquarium. I have a canister filter currently running on a community tank thats going to be given away soon.

What i want to know is what should i do about the filter? Should i keep it running in a bucket? Should i take out the mechanical filtration media and change it out but keep the same bio filtration?

as of now what im planning is taking the filter all apart to clean it but im going to leave the bio stuff in a bucket with old tank water.

Let me know if you agree or have any ideas.

Be careful I have just lost a tank load due to this I think. Not same type of fish but I think all tanks need tio be cycled from the beginning.

take the media out of the old filter and stick it in the new one, instant cycle.

there is no old filter and new filter. its all one filter

Sorry your right then to keep it running in a bucket. As the filter manufacturer says filter bacteria die in three hours.

if you can manage to run the filter in a bucket or big enough container, and if you have ammonia you could just add some to keep the bacteria well fed fat and happy.
Then when you get the new tank set it up, fill'er up and put the filter on it. I would then add ammonia to it (like a fishless cycle) Then test the water to make sure it's processing the ammonia, if it is your good to go.
