New Tank!

i encourage any new fish hobbist. it is fun and exciting. there is nothing wrong with a small tank. it can be a good educational start. just take it slow and really be certain what you would like to have in there because the space is limited. as for the platys, i would not put them in a small tank. they are messy and can be a little nippy with smaller fish. as for the cherry barbs, i have 8 of them in one of my 55 gal. tanks and they all swim together. quite nice, and very colorful. but i must say, if you added the cherry barbs, other than a couple of corys that's all i would add. you have to be careful in a small environment. small impacts can make big problems. i find it easier to maintain my big tanks than the 10 gal. good luck. :)

right here you go mate i did some research for you as that seems to be what you want everyone to do the aqua-40 is a 28ltr tank which makes it 6.16uk gallons or 7.40us gallons not the 8ukg you was origionally mentioning so maybe now you would like to research what you could keep in it as i have said to you before you are extremely limited to what you can keep in the tank and the fish you want need to be kept in groups and you tank isnt large enough for it.

so ur saying the internet knows more than what it says on the BOX! it says on the BOX that it is 40litres, ill sya it agian for u, 40litres...im sure they wouldnt go making things up like that on packaging would they mark?
so it is 8g, i even asked helsekia in an old post what her aqua 40 was, wat do ya know it was a 40litre, thats y there called aqua 40!....iv researched cherrys and u can keep cherry barbs in either 5+, trios, pairs, some people on herer even keep them on thier own! (have a look in fish index!!)

im not gonna get corys tho as my lfs only sell the normal ones and theyll just take up all the room.
now i know that guppys swim all around im thinking about getting 5 of them and ordering some pygmys from my lfs (probably have to wait 3months but hey)...any other ieas? thanks :D

Hi,

I keep platies and males usually get to 1.6" and females to 2.5" although of course there are always the odd expections. Mine do poop alot but I have them in a 15g tank. They also breed like mad so you will need to be prepared for that assuming you have a mixed group.

I have read though that you shouldn't put neons in a new tank but wait until the tank has fully matured say about 6 months.

With regardd to the number of fish you keep of any group ie 2,3,6, in my experience the more of any one kind the better. For instance I used to have 2 dwarf neon rainbows (they liked to be kept in groups of 6 or more). Yes they did fine as a pair but they did much better when I bought more. Their colour improved and they swam around alot more.

I think it would be better to keep just a few fish to start and build up once you can upgrade to a larger tank. Or go with a betta or 2 (provided you divide the tank of course. NEVER put 2 males together.

Your tank size, well I am not sure but I have had tanks that say one thing on the box but quite another whne I have looked over the internet. Just double check with your lfs.

About Mark telling you to get flowers, a quote from SirMinion to me was "Four gallons is not a fish tank, it's a vase get flowers!" just thought i'd add that. =)

so no one else can say that then no ok. As for your cherry barbs why dont you check this out http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=60812 as it tells you on there that a group of at least 6 is best although some people say a 1m1f can get on but group of 6 is best as you have been advised by many people on here but it doesnt seem to sink in.

And as for your tank here are some links you may wanna check out before you jump down peoples throat these say your tank is 28ltrs. So before you try and make me look stupid mate do some research and to all people reading this im not just picking on him but he has posted various threads asking for help and ignors anything he is told he will just plug away till he hears one person tell him he can have what he want so dont sit there thinking im being harsh but he is not taking any advise in to account.
http://www.hunstantonaquatics.com/specialoff.htm

Here is a whole forum conversation telling you that your aqua 40 is only 27 ltrs
http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/modules/newbb...id=3009&forum=1

Oh and look another forum here that you yourself have posted in telling you that your aqua-40 is 27 ltrs.
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=136717
think thats enough for you to be getting on with. So dont go and tell me to just shut up in future.

you need to learn to take our advice in, we're not trying to destroy your tank!!!! we're here to help you but if you don't listen then its not worth you being part of this forum. so your tank is 27 litres you need to know this so your fish are happy in the size tank you have!!!!! barbs are best in a group as i have previously said. as for neons a tank over 6 months is what i've been told and have read so your complete choice of fish is wrong in my eyes. for you all i would reccommend is a betta or 2 if you divide the tank but i'd say just keep the 1 and give it the whole tank as i don't think your that serious if you want what you have suggested no matter how much research you do you need to pay attention to what it and we are telling you!!! we are noot being harsh just stating what you need to know.

just a question - i know there is debate about the tank size - and it says (this) on the box and (that) somewhere else

tetra-man - HOW MUCH WATER IN LITRES IS IN THERE????

This will give you an idea of what EXACTLY (fish wise) you can have in there - never mind what it says on the box - cos whatever it does say water volume will be displaced by you putting in bogwood and pebbles

- i been told a thousand times ""if you ovestock your tank you increase the risk of your fish dying""

so i take their advice !!

I went to my local lfs today and couldnt see 40ltrs anywhere on the box it makes me angry that i give advise then it gets ignored same for all you guys but what makes it worse is when yourselves think im being harsh i wasnt was just infuriated that people dont listen the telling me to shut up as i only have a 9g so cant talk look what i keep in a 9g then look what i keep in other tanks so if i offer my opinion i would sppriciate it if people didnt try to make me look like a fool and try to be little me infront of other forum members i appologise if i sounded immature for going through the process of adding links and saying basically i told you so but had to get my point across mainly so people didnt think i was pompuss.

i dont think people are dissing you on the advice u are giving

just seems a bit "sharp" of a comment about the tank size that's all - and yung people dont always see the "funny" side of sarcasm (if that's what it was)

think tetraman and you (mark) got off on the wrong foot

:/

yh, sorry mark....no hard feelings?
iv read another article it is 27litres, but it does say 40litres on the box, i put 27 litres in a converter and it came to 7.1 gallons (UK), so what fish would you lot reccommend to have in it?..so it is 27litres, which is 7 gallons

- o yea, its in ama bedroom setup with water and a fake plan and filter going!!! :D :D :D :D

Hi,

Mark if you happen to read this then I did think your intial comment about the tank size was abit harsh.
However I do agree that tetra_man2 doesn't always listen to what is being said. (no offense Tetra_man2) I have just read other threads by you and they go on for pages and pages and still the point doesn't get across.

Having said all that, he is younf and exciting by his first proper tank. I have to admit I was abit loathe to listen when I was that age!!!

Hope everyone sorts everything out and that the tank eventually gets some fish in it that will be happy.

HI :D

When we bought our first tank I also went to one of th £1 shops and bought a large Jug with ltr measurements on it, I also went to tesco and invested in 2 of their cheap 73p buckets they hold 10 ltrs each.

The point i am trying to make is it isnt expensive or hard to measure your water content yourself and in doing so you can be confident that any meds or water treatments you need to add in the future will be in the correct measure.

PS the reason for the two buckets is for me 2 buckets = 1/4 watter change and if i do a third well then it is nearer a 1/3 water change but at least i know what is comming out without having to get to scientific!

You may find all of this a bit of a pain just now but wait until you have a prob and you arent exactly sure of your water quantity  and it you like me have fish that are seen as scaleless or some other such oddity then you really do need to know this bit of fact PDQ!!

 you like me are in love with your tank and desperate to see it set up, others in this forum are also saying they would love you to have a great set up, but just take care of your tank now and the fish you get in the future will live longer and be happier! :fun: :D :) :p :fun:

@ tetra-man

YOU decide it's your tank - what do YOU really like the look of fish wise???

it may have to be decided and maybe comes to terms with it by you - that you can only have small fish in there or at least a small number cos of the swimming room they have

(would be like us expected to do breast sroke in a bath tub) NO ROOM :X :X :/

YOU do mention in earlier posts that u like the look of platy's - why not go for them - have a look around for sum nice coloured ones? I cant comment on the size of fish etc as i'm only interested in angelfish at the moment.....

just wondering to others who have any ideas for you in this topic - should the planting and bogwood and pebbles be reduced???? (just wondering)!!!

hope all goes well :good: :)

Mate 27ltrs is 5.94ukg its 7.13usg you are going to struggle to put anything in the tank as i have said time and time again your best bet is to go for a betta and a couple of adfs. Or if you heart is set on the other type of fish i would say 1 honey gourami and maybe 4 neons but that would be about it and make sure you do regular water changes i wouldnt go for platies as 3 platies would really be all you could have and you couldnt handle the fry. The choice is yours really so you will have to think quiet hard about what you want do some research and then post and we will tell you but you need to stay away from ottos barbs and things like that they just aint gonna work.
