New Tank, Baby! Finally, Hope For Aggresives

I finally got a larger tank, picking it up today! 75g!!!
Sooooo, You see the signature below, recomendations? Actually, update first. The 15g seems to be very happy. Those fish just do their thing, not a care in the world. The firemouth, growing ever so slowly, if at all. Lost all signs of aggression with the passing of his convict tankmate. So I would almost hate to disturb the magic their.

So, the JD, and the other convict (who has out grown the JD!) Need the big space for sure. I know this is open ended and the possibilities are endless,

BUT, can I put a school in the 75g with the convict and JD? I have some room now. Can an Angel survive with the convict around? An Oscar?

you need to put all the cichlids in there even if they look happy, they need the space.

oscars need a minimum of 75g on their own. angels would probably be attacked by the other aggressive cichlids.

Some people say 55g, but when you see a big oscar and then look at the size of a 55g, it's not much of a life. 75g is a slightly better "minimum" to work with, 100g even better.

Won't all that animosity just start back up? Or should 75 let those live a bit. This is it, all you 100gallon happy people! 75g until I get a bigger house, this thing is as big as an upright piano! My wife says "uh, I'm a little bit in shock with .. how big that thing really is." This was not a good comforting statement, more like, disturbed.

So, word on a school or can I only have 3 fish in here?

a school of what tho?

there isnt really anything that wouldnt get eaten that isnt too big to add to the tank that schools.

silver dollars and balas all grow too large.

you could maybe add a few clown loaches but only if your guranteed to upgrade in a few years.

there slow growers so you would have the time.

I've heard that tiger barbs can hold their own, don't they school? Tin Foil Barbs (too, big)? And OK what about different kinds if not schooling fish. scumsuckers, or you know something of interest besides the three. For instance I stuck some feeder minnows in with them a while back...they are still around, shoot, for that matter I could have a school of minnows, I know at least mine can survive just fine....Danios seem to be doing well, Is all of this due to my short time view of these systems?

well 75G will be fine for the JD, firemouth and the con.

i dont have any experience with tiger barbs but i have seen them in tanks with bigger fish so your probably right.

youll find the minnows would get eaten by the JD and the con atleast. if not now then when they grow up a bit.

by scumsuckers do you mean plecs?

could get a nice pair of bristle noses that could live there life out in the tank and if you gave them enough cover you mite get some fry which would be interesting!

Funny story, I bought a school of minnows (11) and a some sort of tetra (it was $1.89) to let the water cycle in the 75g, and have something to watch in this giant thing that dominates our living room...
Next morning, ALL of the minnows are gone. I mean completely gone, not a trace, not even a tiny bit of remains of fin or eye or tissue....absolutely clear, except the tetra guy is still there swimming back and forth merrily. He could not and I mean COULD NOT have eaten them he's like 1.5 inches, and didn't even show a bulge in his belly.
Well, I have a cannister filter which I am told is very powerfull, I don't have a little filter basket at the bottom of the intake tube! Now the water is getting a nasty film on the top. I think they swam up, or got sucked up the filter and are decaying at the bottom of my filter. What a mess.

have you looked in the filter for them?

that would be the place to start.

I know, right? But, 11? Eleven?! They all managed to find this 1/2" hole in one night.

yes, I know I have to take the thing apart, but I am not looking forward to it, Its got like 6-7 layers of different stuff, and the bottom (intake) is where the minnows would be, is hollow porcelain beads. That's going to be fun to clean, eh?

Well, I'll let you know how it goes. Any worries about the water with decaying little fish in it? PH, or Nitrites...etc.?
