Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations/tips on things to buy for the Puppy we'll be getting in the lead up to the new year, the ***** has just started going into whelp tonight so they should be here in the next 48 hours which is quite exciting, so we thought it would be a good idea to start getting things together, we've already bought a cage and on the shopping list are Kong toys, a training line, collar etc.

Thanks

What breed are you getting?
Start saving up old newspapers as you'll need plenty for housetraining.
Get some old blankets from charity shops for bedding, as again you'll go through a lot of those with a puppy.
Brushes, feed bowl, water bowl etc.
Dog guard for the car, unless the crate fits

Sorry, I forgot the most important part, they're Labrador Pups, here's the Dam:

Aww she looks ready to pop, wonder how many she'll have.
My GSP had 11 in her first litter.
Right, you're having a lab, so a heavy duty vacuum then as they shed an awful lot of hair.
Lots of chew toys as they're terrible chewers as youngsters, don't ever give cooked bones though.
Find out about a local training class, your vet should know of some.

Our vacuum cleaner is one of those pet ones so should be up to the job, I've bought some of those Kong toys, they're supposed to aid teething, you stuff them with dry food and they're meant chew on them. We've found a local trainer, the guy formulates his own food too which is free of additives and stuff and is raved about by users so it must be good :good:

Are puppy pads worth the money?

I don't think they are,
Labs are intelligent, so newspaper should do.
Your breeder will probably give you some tips, but if I can help, then ask away.
Is this your first dog?

Don't forget to post pics when you get him/her, always love to see puppy pics.

if you're gonna crate train Jack, then just news paper. There's no need to buy those pads. I find pups hard than babies to train.

bet you can't wait!

Look into clicker training, get a clicker. I've had one in my pocket for years, in the last 4 years we've had 3 pups between my house & my son's place. Having had multiple dogs for a while look into break away collars. These can be a lifesaver if you leave a collar on a dog. Get a set of clippers for the nails, while you won't need them first thing get the pup used to having nails touched with them, makes nail trimming so easy in the future.

Oh, and a camera. You had better have a camera for puppy pictures that will be posted here! :good:

I wish you were closer, I'd send you my leftover puppy pads. I did think they were worth it. My pup took to them well, and they saved the floors. Compared to newspapers, it's kind of like comparing disposable diapers to cloth diapers with no plastic outer pants.

I better get saving newspaper then! Yeah, I'm excited, pictures will be up as soon as I have the opportunity to take them I'll get some up, as well as updating my planted journal which is long over due.

Awesome, I'll look into getting one of those as well as a set of clippers.

I see what you mean with regards to the plastic lined nappies, the crate itself has a plastic base but cleaning it won't be fun, we have a pack of 30 that my mum bought yesterday, so I guess we could try them and newspaper to see which we prefer.

Thanks everyone.

I've just got a puppy. I've got blankets (for the car)/to chew. Puppy bed, chew toys, squeaky toys, soft toys and a ball (I've got a couple, one with a bell inside and one squeaky) - he's also just got a ball on a rope which he appears to LOVE.

Water dish, food bowl, collar, leader, food, treats :), puppy pads (or newspaper as I see you are going with), I got mine a harness for walking as I can give him a good tug without hurting him.

Extras, grooming brush, shampoo, nail clippers.

Crate if you want one - we've not used a crate, but we did get a baby gate to stop him getting stuck up stairs :hey: .

When I got mine, I asked the breeder what food they were feeding him to try and minimise the "stress" of leaving.

Also I read that a puppy for the first few nights might cry a little; so take it up to bed with you (leave it in it's bed though). One of my friends said when they got a puppy they took a few t-shirts from the laundry (dirty) and put a warm hot water bottle on the puppies bed and it's was settled for the night. Mine wasn't crying during the night; he was just fidgeting.

ooh patience - you'll need that when potty training.

If you are in the UK it will need a name tag (if it gets lost) - ok just looked at your location, you are supposed to have a dog tag on your dog in public with your details on it.

I also totally agree with Tolak; a camera is essential :).

Ooh poop bags too (for walkies).

If you are going to use puppy pads - I was recommended B&M Bargains from my breeder as they are a bit cheaper. It was 30 for about £5, where the supermarkets were about 15 for £5.

Any questions just ask, I'm a few weeks ahead of you in the puppy 'game' :)
