Plans Are Coming along @ the House.

Last night after Discussions with the Wife.
I have Decided to Gravel the entire Back Garden with York Gravel, till we can afford to have it Decked.

So Heres the Plan.

A Large Shallow Pool in the Nicest Part of the Garden With Lots of Large Slate Rocks from my current Pond and Mums Garden.

The Pool will be circular and Gravelled with the same as the garden, so that it merges into 1.

The pool Will be about 10 Inches deep, Just deep wnough for some Lilles and Floating Plants and Maybe some White Clouds or Danios.

Filtered and Water Trickling over a Very LArge Peice of Rock that will Run Length ways Across the pond and create Hiding Places for Aquatic Life.
We have a Brook running alongside the house, that already attracts lots of Life.
Enjoyed watching DragonFlies/Mayflies Flitting around the garden Yesterday.

I hope to Plant the Marginals using all the New Shoots from my Large Barrel of Flag Iris. And then Use Acers and Bamboo Around It.

I am Gonna Try and Creae a Sun Shade Using Reed Matting, Above the Pond to create some shade.
We Get Loads of Sun All Day.

Should Be Fun

Thanks TP, Thats Great Giving Me Ideas.

I am Also gonna Put in a Fire Pit so that we can sit out in the Garden on Lovely Summer Evenings watching the Birds and Squirells in the Over hanging Oak Trees.

The House is Inside a Copse with a natural Pool.

Okey Dokey, Update.

All the Weeds have been Pulled and garden Raked.

We have a roll of carpet in the Attic which will never be used. So that is Gonna Be Used as an Ultimate Weed Supresant. Then the Membrane will go Down.

Have Cut the Barrell to Size and Cleaned out well. Fish have been Moved to 1 of the Mature Butts with Cuttings in it.

Neighbour is Gonna Borrow a Pick Up next Week, so that it will be easier to move the Gravel to the House.

Have bought a Few of the Plants - Zebra Grass and A Bamboo type Marginal - Should look Nice.
No real Bamboo as it is Expensive, No one has Baby Plants in Cov, and the same goes for Acers. Will have to Wait for the Grocers near the house - He Gets Baby Plants in from time to time.

thats it for now.

Pond has gone in.

Only Took 5 Mins to dig the Hole on Level it.
Planted =
Zebra Grass * 1
Bamboo Type Grass *1
Flag Iris * 7
Marginals *2
Dwarf Lilly - Taken from 1 of the Butts *1 Very Large.
Water Lettuce *3 Large Clumps
Large pot of Azolla (Fairy Moss) *1

To Plant =
Iris - Around the Pond
Acers
Bamboo
Reeds - To be Taken from Well Developed Clumps @ Mums
Slate - Using a Margarine Tub and Gravel

following this thread with interest. look forward to the piccies as well. :)

when you say bamboo is expensive... how much do you mean by that? there's a massive stand of it growing next to my apartment complex. depending on how much shipping would be to the UK, i might could send you cuttings or a couple of young plants.

(mind you, this is the real-deal stuff that grows a dozen-odd feet tall and is rather invasive in my "nice" hot & humid region.)

Hi Gill,

Have you looked in b&q for bamboo, they have had it in my local one for less than a tenner for a decent clump. They also sell acers cheap but not as cheap as no-frills. Might be worth a look if you have one nearby.

Hope this helps

I had a Look @ B+Q but they were not very good Specimens. Going to Wellesbourne Market on Saturday. Will Have a Look There.

I think you just need to make more gardening friends, Bamboo is quite agressive when its happy, if you know anyone with bamboo it shouldnt be hard to go in and dig up a small stalk and its roots and give them a bucket of soil to fill the hole in returm, in a few months it will be as if you never took any of there bamboo and in a few years you will have a nice established patch to fight off on your own property. Also, Acers are maples arent they, If you cant grow one from seed you can try Air layering.

Finally, not to hijack but I think that anyone interested in this thread should take a look at This thread and show your support, thanks.

Hey Guys,

Plans have definetely changed for the garden.

Stayed there over the Weekend, as could not do much with my fingers bandaged up. sat in the lounge and read harry potter - sad I know @ nearly 30.

So witnessed alot of activity in the Garden. And Not the Nice Kind.

1. Magpies - Picking at the plants nad knocking them over, pulling at the Lilly Stems and Pads Poking Holes.
2. Big Dumb Wood Pigeons are nesting in the trees next to the house - Lots of crap on the wall and garden, Again Knocking over the plants and trying to fly away with the Lilly to use as nesting material. That was Funny to watch - Dumb Pigeon trying to fly off with a lilly.
3. Squirells - Eating the Shoots and Lilly
4. WE HAVE A HAWK of some kind - I cannot believe it, A real Hawk(most Likely A Sparrowhawk) - I heard it calling yesterday. So that means No Fish.

Plan is still to have a Japanese Type Garden.

I am now going to have a Water Feature with a Small Pool - It will be no more than 12 Lites, So just minimal Planting.
Heres What I am Hoping to Get either 1 would be Nice

Side Note
Coventry Council have gone all out this year for Britain In Bloom. This means that In August when the Competition Ends all the Japanese Palnting Used is up for Grabs - aswell as all the Huge Monoliths Used and All that you can Carry. I amPuttingmy name Down for the Following:
