New Pets, Mice

They're adorable, almost makes me want mice again
Sadly, tumors are very common in them. I've had two rats and one rabbit die of cancer. Mammary tumors seem to be particularly common in females. :/

I had two mice and was told they were both males the next week i had 10 babies!!! :hyper:

Tumors.... :-( My rat Sugar died of one that was in her uterus... Poor thing. And Sandy my oher rat has three. One has been removed, the vet said she couldnt remove the other ones because Sandy probably wouldnt survive the op. :shout: :-( :-(

Luckily the tumor was not a tumor. It was an abscess. I have other worries now thought ->

Omigosh, cuties!!!! Look at the little whiskers!!
You can pretty much guarantee you're gonna have babies if you buy females that have been housed with males... watch your other lady, too, she might also be pregnant :p I almost said something about Burana looking quite plump and possibly pregnant, then someone brought up the "tumor" and I thought it might just have been that.

mantis147 -- How could someone have missexed your mice?? The male bits are... uh... obvious to say the least  I once overheard a kid in a pet store asking an employee if one of the mice had a tumor... the reply, "No, that's just a male"

Synirr i was young at the time didnt think of looking! you know what kids are like

Thapsus watch the babies they move like lightning and jump from any height!

Lol mantis, I meant the person who told you they were both male... surely they looked?

Oh the cuteness  But how did that happen  Was the one pregnant before you bought here ? Who's the mommy ?

Burana had 5 babies. They are now four days old. Berocca had just one, two days ago. Beroccas baby is the one in the middle. They were bregnant when I bought them and they were in the petshop only under a week so they have been with boys before that.

Question: How can anyone tell the sex from three days old baby. I shoud have killed boys yesterday (law says they must be killed max three days old) but they all looked the same so I didn't. I just hope they aren't all boys.

Naw, you don't have to kill the males. Just raise them as girls, and they can be transgender. They don't have a law that says you must kill the transgender ones right? :grr:

Why do you have to kill the males? Surely you just need to separate them from the girls, including mum, when they hit sexual maturity (5 weeks in rats, but I'll look into mice for you).

Edited to add: It seems they're the same as rats for that - separate them at 4.5 to 5 weeks.

Huh ? I'm lost - why on earth kill them ?

There really cute, but cringe when i see there tails.

I have to separate them when 3,5 weeks old. I meant that no one here wants to keep males as pet because they are so smelly. So usually they are killed before they are 3 days old. After that you can't kill them. I think I have 3 boys and 3 girls. And I doubt I'm going to find homes for the boys but I just have to try.

Here's one of the girls:
