Hey so I have a new Peacock Gudgeon addition to my tank. At the time I did not know she was a female so I got her no questions asked. Little did I know she is pregnant. So my first question is:
Will she replace the males job of "egg sitting"?
Now this next question I haven't been able to find and answer for either:
How long does it take for the female gudgeon to lay her eggs?
And then I have one more thing to ask:
If I were to add a male when this is al over would they get along or would he run her ragged...basically I am asking do I need to get a new male and a new female gudgeon so one wont get worn out or will everything work out with just the female I have and a new male.

Thanks for reading hope to get an answer,
-The New Peacock Gudgeon Owner

The female will not lay eggs as far as I know unless there is a male that courts her and can fertilize them. At least mine didn't until I added a male.
Once the male finds a suitable place he will chase and lure the female to the area and she should lay her eggs and he'll then fertilize them and she'll be kicked out while he guards/fans them. They take around a week to hatch.

I think it'd depend on the males personality if he'd run her ragged or not.
I have one male and female and there are new babies about every 2 weeks (Around a week for the male to rest and then court the female again, a week for the eggs to hatch) They are perfectly fine.

I worry about the male more than the female honestly as the male does not eat when he is guarding/fanning the eggs.

What sort of decor do you have? They prefer tight spaces. Are you wanting them to breed? Your female would be fine on her own, or you could put more females with her.

I did want to try to answer your questions since these are the only fish I have that have bred for me but THIS will probably be of much more use to you :)
Go to the reproduction section, though the rest of the info is good too. The comments are also useful.

Thanks! That was very helpful and yes my auaquarium is very heavily decorated with live plants and hiding spaces. Looks like I'm off to get a male :)
I have one last thing...in case I can't find a male is it ok to just have the female full of eggs...I would think it to be unhealthy but I am not sure

I'd think it's fine but not 100% sure. It was a few months before I got my male and my female was fine, always begs for food and eats and is very active. :)

Just to add - she is NOT pregnant.

The female does not have foetuses growing inside her, neither are the eggs fertilised. Ninjy is quite right that she will not lay eggs until there is a male to fertilise them, and the female would not guard them.

These guys are right on about this.
One quick suggestion, if you decide to add a male Peacock Gudgeon, make sure you also get another female.
Ideal ratio is 1 male, 2 female.
