Hi, i was thinking about starting a small nano tank a 70-80l cube as this is all i can fit in due to my various fw tanks. i was gonna keep it simple and stocking small. no coral just live rock. i was thinking
2 common clown
1 royal grammer
1 other small fish
1 shrimp

would this work? if so what other fish and shrimp type would you recomend?

done a bit more research now , with that in mind i might go for

2 common clown
1 royal grammer
2 neon goby
2 cleaner shrimp

Would this work?

the royal grammer will nip at your shrimps. they are very territorial so im not sure if the grammer would work. my one killed my camel shrimp. how about 3 clowns 2 neon gobies and 2 shrimp that should work out. but if you want a royal grammar i would definately make sure there is enough hides for everyone but if i was you i wouldnt get one even though they look beautiful
good luck

thats a real shame cos they are the most colurful small fish i have ever seen,
is there anything i could replace it with except another clown?
also what about a small starfish as well?

Well how about a firefish? I dont think the RG would be too bad with shrimps as I have on many occassions seen them in living in reefs together and its the first Ive heard of such a thing, but it may be a hit and miss, but IMO go for it.

There are many other colourful fish, how about a banghai cardinal or a firefish? They tend to be quite peaceful. Id get a fire shrimp though as they are really bright coloured, however they do tend to hide a lot! ;)

1entra's right

and I hate to nitpick, but its Gramma, not Grammer :)

Your right the fire shrimp are nice, but the cleaner shrimp are good as part of a clean up crew and more readily avaliable

might go with
2 clown
2 neon goby
1 purple firefish
2 cleaner shrimp

Is a chocolate chip starfish a good idea for the size tank?

Personally I'd recommend you go against the idea of getting a CCS as they are predatory and a small tank like yours may not be an ideal environment for one! If you want a starfish then how about getting a serpant star? They are hardy and much easier to look afer as they are scavengers and so make good clean up crew! ;)

Right well think i wil;l keep it simple and go with
2 clown
2 neon goby
1 purple firefish
2 cleaner shrimp

Can anyone suggest a good 60-80 l easy to set up tank that looks modern and stylish?

ps . Do they all have solid backs?

i like the d & d nano 90 id this any good? should be a good size to hold
2 clown
2 neon goby
1 purple firefish
2 cleaner shrimp
