New Marine LFS Opening...

The other day i saw a comercial on the T.V. that was on a strictly Marine fish based store. They sell starter kits and the owner has a degree in Marine Boilogy and seems very knowledgeable. I think these guys will be great for me because I'm starting a Marine Reef tank soon. (30-40 gallons) They advertised 20g starter kits but, it mentioned they had bigger. I can't wait! Along with the help on the forums and them, I think setting up my first Marine tank will be a breeze.

No, in all seriousness, it's not as hard as some people will make it out to be. These starter kits sound like a good deal, but check everything that's in the package and make sure you're actually getting a good deal on all the stuff before you buy it. Sometimes you can buy everything you need cheaper seperately and even get better quality stuff. Most importantly, have fun with it. Take my word for one thing though.... marine tanks are a LOT of work. I'm still excited about mine and I go about what I have to do everyday without much thought about it. It wasn't until I was writing directions for my mother-in-law to take care of my SW tank while I'm gone on vacation that I realize just how much work I do on it everyday! Top off water, dose B-ionic 2 part, flake food for damsels, pellet food for gobies, clean algae off glass, flip over any snails that have invertedthemselves, and spray sand off the LR with a turkey baster so it won't choke down coraline growth. That's not counting the things I do on a less regular basis, like feeding zooplankton which the zoanthids will eat.... and checking nitrates and salinity.... and changing the carbon and phosphate material in the filter. As long as you can keep yourself excited about it and keep it fun.... it just kinda becomes a habit to do all this stuff without even thinking about it. If you ever let it get to you and it's no longer fun... it's gonna feel like a LOT of work on a daily basis.

So, have fun, and be prepared for a world of amazement staring at all the strange things that come on your live rock B)

Its true, salt water tank are not as hard as most people think. But it only becomes easier if you are willing to listen to the advice of experienced keeprs. After all, they have probably been there and made the mistakes etc and know the pitfalls. Their knowledge canbe invaluable to a beginner and also save them alot of time and money. Those that choose not to listen usually find the hobby far more hrd work, more expensive and alot less fun

Good luck with the new shop, it sounds just whati need over here (hardly any marine outlets of quality wherei live)

Oh, I didn't mean to sound overconfident. I know how much work they are. But as you guys said, people make the Marine tank idea to sound like a nightmare. And these starter kits are made by them. They dont come in a box like at large corporate pet stores. They include the tank packaes with lights for Marine with the light strip. (These are not the hoods you normally buy in the box) They also come with all the test kits, chemicals and harware.(Skimmers, heaters, sumps, etc.) I was just saying I'm in a good postion to set up this tank.
