New Fish

Right, 32 litre tank started with sand substrate, sponge filter and being heated to 26C. Planning to use that as a galaxy breeder when i get a couple of plants and some java moss in there. Any other suggestions, ideas, experiences?

Edit - After reading a couple of articles on Galaxy breeding I've dropped the temp in the breeding tank to 23C and I'm off to try and get a load of Java moss, which I'll be honest, I haven't seen very often at my lfs's.

keep it at 24-26degrees

use spawning mops nstead of java moss so it can be removed

I'll prob keep the tank a little closer to the temp the tank their in atm so they don't get a big shock when i move them. What you use for spawning mops? just nylon wool or do you buy them? I would like st stay natural if I can but we'll see what I can get hold of. Java moss seems to be in short supply near me.

No that's fine, one of my fishkeeping books has a guide on making them so i'll have a go.

Spawning mops are made and in! I just need to cycle the filter. been running for a week now, but may have to shove it into another filter for a week to be sure. Don't want to take a chance with my galaxy's, even though their bio load must be almost nothing!

I thought so, although the repots I've read about their collection and habitat suggest thy've been living in a muddy puddle in the wild!

Yeah definitely, one of the thing that keeps cropping up when you search for home breeding these fish is to be careful of excessive line breeding and cultivating unwanted genetic traits or defects.

This project is so different to the others i've tried as i really feel like a pioneer in saving this fish. I've had all sorts of fish spawn in my tank from cory's to harlequins, even my neons have had a go. But all i've raised successfully up till now is bronze cory's and a solitary cherry barb. This fish to me is a completely new challenge but I'm looking forward to it.

I think thats bettas your thinking of as the galaxies wild habitat are very clear clean pools (creeks).

I keep mine with small species like pygmy rasbora, lampyes and various suckermouth fish.

Yeah, you're right, small pools, but clear unless disturbed.
