New Fish Today...careful, Lotsa Pics

got myself some new fish today even though i only went in to get some plants. i just couldnt help myself. ive been thinking about getting a couple of rams for a while but very rarely see them around. and today the lfs up the road had bolivians for a reasonable price so i got me one

then i went to see a friend this arvo and i go past this awesome fish shop to get there. on the way home i thought why not go in and have a look. so i did and came out with a small blue ram and a very small clown loach. im upgrading to a 4ft soon so i figure until then i have plenty of room for such a small clown loach.

this loach is cool. most of the loaches ive seen are rather unsociable and inactive even when in groups. this little guy is really active. he swims around a lot and plays in the sand a lot hes cool and a bit of a cutie

Cool clown loach, i really want one (or a group) and i think im upgradin to a 29 gal but its still too small.

as soon as you have room try and add a few more clown loach, they are much happier in groups of 3+.
i had 7 at one time and they swam together and played all the time. my biggest was 7inch,

thats my plan. tis hard though. where i live they are around $30-35 each. even getting them wholesale through work means they're $10.00 each. this one i got at another store cause they had them on sale for $5 (good when you can breed your own fish then you sell them cheap ) the tank they are in now is my 3ft community but i am making that a cichlid tank soon and upgrading to a 4ft then i iwll work on some more

I wouldn't keep clowns in groups less than 5, so you maay think about getting more in the future.

$10 isnt that bad of a price for a clown loach. $30-35 is very high, unless they are around the 4-5" range. As for the shop breeding them, thats probably not true either. Clown loaches dont breed in home aquariums. Good luck with the new tank, but remember, clown loaches will eventually need a tank of 125 gallons or more

if granville hammond could successfully raise 450 fry in 1995 in his home aquarium then maybe in the 12 years since then other people have read the article that appeared in practical fishkeeping about his experience with the loaches and started to successfully breed them themselves. which apparently happened as there are a few accounts around these days of people doing it. this lfs could quite well be one of these people. all you need is the internet and a google search to find info. they have the shop but most of the family works at their home which is also a reasonable size fish farm type set up. ive tracked down the webpage where the story is of the first guy to do it and a couple of others for interest

and yes i know that stats required for when he gets big. which gives me some time as they grow so slow. but for right now i have 25 gallons more than the minimum required for such a small one (he's only about 2" including tail). whenever i am going to get something new i do my homework on it although the purchase was unexpected i had been wanting to get my first one for a while.
