New Betta

Ok so i picked up a new male vt betta today. Hes a yellow colour with some red dots on his fins. So i had a bit of an incident this evening after being in his new home for a couple of hours i decided to check on him and to my suprise, my other crowntail male decided to somehow get into the other section of my divided tank. Not too much damage was caused i dont think, though his tail fin looks like it has a bit of a chunk taken out of it. The poor thing was just cowering in the bottom corner of the tank while my CT swam happily round.

Where i got him from had the bettas kept in those tiny cups and put together so that it is highly possible for the bettas to jump into other cups. I think that is what happened to my new guy aswell before i got him because his fins are looking a bit ragged though they arent all fuzzy on the edges as if they are rotting.

I guess my question is, should i put him in another tank and treat him for fin rot, or should i just wait and see if his injuries heal by themselves?

I've attached an image of what my tank looks like, except mine is only 2 bays not four. Its filtered and heated, and i bought a light for it and put some live plants in each section.

Any help/suggestions is much appreciated.

If the water circulates in the divided tank it is a good idea to make sure it isn't fin rot before putting him in. Most divided tanks should be treated like a community tank when introducing new fish.

If you have the type of hood that doesn't lay fairly flat on the top of the tank, your bettas can jump into the other side of the divider. I ended up getting a separate divider at the lfs that stands a bit higher than the usual dividers. It's worked beautifully. Benny Blue now stays on his own side.

Ugh so i got up thismorning, put the tank light on and the CT had gone to the other side again! My VT was just sitting in the bottom corner again still breathing thank goodness! I dont think there is much more damage to his fins. I think i'll attach a piece of hard plastic to the top of the divider so that it sits flush with the lid.

I feel so bad for my new vt

i'm sorry to say but the fish you discribe doesn't sound natural. it could very esaly been dyed....could you post a picture of it?

I highly doubt this fish has been died . My camera is out of action at the moment. I'll try and find a similar pic on the net somewhere.

sorry if i affended you by my comment. but i have found dyed betta before.... and what you were discribing sound like one.

lol its ok. I didnt get offended. Just kinda shocked i guess. I am strongly against dying fish though. When i saw him in the shop i remebered that i had seen some posted somewhere else and that they were dalmation bettas?

Anyway, he flared before so i was able to see his fins properly. He has a few tears in them, so should i just see if they heal on there own or dose the tank with some anti bacterial medication or something?

I think i've caught the betta bug. I cant stop buying them and i have no run out of powerpoints in my room so i cant get any more heated/filtered tanks.

Unless....unless i can convince my parents to let me have a smallish tank in the kitchen

Also both my bettas seem to spit out the betta pellets i feed them. Though they love bloodworms. Is there any other food i could try so that they arent just having bloodworms?

definetly medicate them! I use Melafix, i also add some aquarium salt and do frequent water changes! works like a charm! good luck!

as an alternate food try Brime shrimp frozen or alive.
