A heater for a 10 gallon tank shouldn't cost too much. The container of which I spoke would just submerge in the main tank. It is true that this is not an option if the main tank is diseased. Water bottles isn't a great option but sometimes you can increase temp enough (temporarily) by using a lamp or putting the tank by a window. But the window can be terribly inconsistent.
