Good evening all,

I have recently gotten back into the hobby after a five year absence. I am currently doing a fishless cycle in a ten gallon tank I have, as it is all I currently have room for.

Doing some research this is how I plan to stock it:

Equipments:

Tank (LxDxH): 20 x 11 x 12 inch (11.4gUS)
Filters: Marineland Penguin 100B

Selected species:

1X Dwarf Gourami
4X Panda Cory
3X Ghost Shrimp
2X Otos

Would this be an ok way to go?

I still have about a week to go on the cycle so it will be at least 10 days before I buy any fish and I want to get a good idea of what I am adding before I go out and buy them.

Thank you,

Alex

I think that panda cories should be kept in groups of at LEAST 6, but maybe ask someone more experienced than I.

The Gourami, cories n Oto cats should get along fine. Not too sure about the shrimp. I will add the Otos later tho and would increase the number, they need a well established tank, with enough supply of algae.

In a tank that size, you really only have room for the panda cories or the otos, as they both need to be in groups of 6+. I'd go for the cories; otos aren't very easy.

be wary of the gourami and shrimp. I think my female shrimp has dropped her eggs because the gourami likes to feel them (with the cute little feelers underneath). He's not aggressive, but he likes to touch things.

+1 on keeping corys in 6+ groups. I know we all want as much variety as we can get, but they like groups

Ok I'll up the corys to 6 and drop the ottos and shrimp. Any recommendations as to what else I can add?

Thank you,

Alex

I wouldnt bother dropping the shrimp unless you are going to cover the floor so the cories are forced to patrol the same patch of water, and i wouldnt worry too much about the Gourami upsetting your shirmp, unless 1000 baby shrimp each month is what your looking for? (I might have over exaggerated the number there a little, but if your not fussed about breeding them, its no worry really, and they do breed in "numbers". Big ones.)

The shrimp make such a tiny impact on your bioload that its normally negligable, and i think its normal unless you have hundres of them, to leave them from your stocking calculations.

Unfortunately mate, you in the same position as me. All these wonderful ideas, and no tank big enough!

I have a new 72ltr (16 gal) setup thats going to have 6-10 cories and something else (perhaps a small school of endlers etc) when i get back from holiday. I too had loads of ideas, but a lot of the fish i like have to be in groups, and the ones that are happy on their own (not many) will outgrow the tank too quickly, and it would just be unfair.

When your a newb, a tank our size looks like a nice big project, but in reality, a 72ltr tank, is smaller than most peoples QT tank lol

and :hi:

Haha I couldn't agree more. I remember looking at the tanks and thinking "yeah, a 48litre is big enough, that there scary looking 62litre looks FAR too big!!"... so I bought the tank and THEN looked into fish... "I can only have how few? "

but I wouldn't change my 48 litre for the world! I love my little tetras and my cheeky gourami and my OH SO CUTE shrimp

Got a 96 litre at work which unfortunately has old dieing fish (shocked from being saved from a gross tank). But once they are gone I will look into restocking.

I'm glad people come on here to get advice before buying fish :) as newbies or returning to the hobby from a break, it's always best to seek advice so you know your fish will be super happy and healthy!

As for gourami shrimp relations, I don't want millions of the buggers, but some babies would be nice.
