I have just recently purchased a new tank.
I got it all set up paying attention to the advice given by the aquariam manager who sold me all the supplies.
I had my tank running for a week before adding any new fish.
Once i got my fish, I floated them in the bag for 20 minutes to adjust them to the climate and so that they would not get shocked being added to the water. I added them a couple at a time (I had 12)
For the first hour or so, all of them were fine, swimming happily, getting used to the new surroundings.
Then i noticed that one of my Neon Tetras was stuck to the water filter suction pipe. Sadly, once it was freed, it did not make it, I just presumed that this fish was damaged or just not a good swimmer and the current of the water must be too strong for it.
Then in the middle of the night I got up to get a drink of water and I noticed that another of my fish was stuck in the suction of the water filter and again, this fish did not make it.
Then in the morning I found another 3 stuck to the water filter, Now I am worried. I cannot find anyone to help me with this problem. I checked the water filter and I cannot amend the strength of the suction.

I followed all the instructions given to me when I started with the tank but still I have lost half of my fish in the first night.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Hello,

Maybe you could get a quarantine box and affix it around the filter - this may prevent the fish from getting sucked in. Alternatively, some fine gauze or mesh around the filter.

Or a new filter altogether with adjustable strength.

what filter are you using? If its an external one you should be able to change the flow by turn closing the valves slightly on the in take and outflow.

Well, the water filter came with the tank and is built in. I will try to change the flow by turn closing the valves slightly on the in take and outflow just like you suggested. Failing that I will try the quaratine tank idea and if that does not work, then I guess I will just have see what else can be done.

Thank you so much for your help

have you cycled your tank? have you heard of cycling? if not, have a read of the pinned threads on cycling at the top of the forum.....it sounds like your neons are suffering from ammonia poisoning.
While you are sorting this out, the best thing you can do is go and do a water change.....right now. If your tank is uncycled, you will need to do 2-3 20% water changes every day. I know this sounds like a lot, but once you understand cycling, you will see why.
also, neon tetras are not very tough, and so will succumb to ammonia/nitrite poisoning fast.
welcome to the forum, all the best, Merry.

Thank you so much I will do that. I have never heard of that and the aquarium I bought all the stuff from did not mention it to me at all.

Im going to go do that now thanks

i would swtich off that filter then get a new filter all together.but dont take my advice just check first

As someone mentioned, your tank isn't cycled. Cycling is the process of adding ammonia to the water to build a bacteria colony to process it. Simply settng it up and allowing the filter to run for a week as the people in the fish stores usually suggest doesn't do anything other than test your filter.

Once i got my fish, I floated them in the bag for 20 minutes to adjust them to the climate and so that they would not get shocked being added to the water. I added them a couple at a time (I had 12)
12 fish in a cycling tank is an extremely high number. I know you have already lost half of those so 6 is a much better number to keep up with. You will still have to stay on top of the water changes. You goal will be to keep ammonia and nitrite levels below .25 ppm. Do you have a good liquid master test kit? If not, get wone ASAP. It is a must to know what the ammonia and nitrite levels as they are toxic and will kill the fish.

I think the shop must have some very unhealthy fish or there is something in your tank that killing them. Filters arent' strong enough to suck fish in unless they are already sick and dying. I would talk to the person that sold you the fish and tell them that they are dying . As I mentioned, there could also be something in your tank that is causing the problem. What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH in the tank and for your tap water? What chemicals have you added to the tank. Dechlorinator is the only thing you need. What is the water temperature? What kind of decorations are in the tank? There are a lot of things that could cause problems but my thoughts are that the fish were already sick.

Healthy fish will never get stuck to a filter. The intake isn't strong enough unless you are talking about fry.
