Today I went to lfs. I got some neon glassfish thinking that they are that naturally. How gullable I am! After looking in the fish index I realized that they were altered. I guess I keep them. The kids really like them! I was disappointed that God didn't make them that way. I was also reading that they like live food. Will they eat fish flakes or should I buy them other types of food?

Dont be too surprised if they dont last as i described some of the problems with these fish in the cross breeding debate in another area of the forum :what:

however i hope all goes well for you with these fish and personally i feed all of my smaller fish flake with bloodworm etc given now and then to provide variety so these fish should be fine kept like this also ;) .

Good luck and keep us posted 8)

Pete,

Can you tell me the name of the topic? I would like to read it.

Thnx

Sure its .................open soapbox.......in the cichlid section :D

:( Faye, it's a pity that these fish are dyed but you have them now. Try live daphnia, available at your lfs and while you're there complain about the barbaric practice of dying fish for profit! ;) Mac.

yeah well said mac, faye make sure the lfs knows how unhappy you are that you weren't informed.

The fish are actually injected with a flourecent dye to give them thier colours. Pretty much like giving us a tattoo. It is extremely painful for the fish, and there are quite a few casulties during the process. It is an extremely cruel way to "create" a fish. In the U.K. there is a campaign going on that gives a roll of honour to lfs that say no to all GM fishes. You'll be shocked have we have created various fishes. I'll see if Davy can pin it up in this thread for all to see.

I got some freeze dried daphnia and freeze dried blood worms. They really liked them.

Thanks.

Faye

I read the open soap box forum. I had no idea what these poor fish went thru. I definelty will not buy anymore. They have a good home now. So far they are doing well. They ate a generous portion of blood worms and daphnia. I will keep a close eye on them. Will their protective coating come back? Or will they always have a weakend immune system?

Oh the debate was very interesting.

Faye

:) They should have a coating reforming and if you give them optimum conditions they will live quite normally if they survive the ordeal. The dye will disappear soon and you will be left with a very attractive fish in its own right. ;) Mac.

Faye if your unsure add some Stress Coat and/or Melafix. this will help them.
