Need Some Advice On My First Tank

A few more questions if I may:

1. After closer inspection of the fish tank, I noticed that some of the sealant is not applied 100%

(I have seperated where the sealant is not on the glass with a white line - upright pic and sideways pic).

The area is about six inches long - it still looks sealed ok (I haven't yet filled it with water to test it).

Should I take it back and ask for a replacement (I think it was the last one), or just buy some sealant and fill it in myself (it looks a very easy job to do)?

2. I can't find the best way to clean the inside of a new tank - I've just wiped it over with a wet cloth, should this suffice?

3. Is cork as good as polystyrene to sit the tank on, I was going to by polystyrene tiles, but went for cork instead?

4. I've bought 'Household Ammonia' from Homebase. It only says - CONTAINS: Ammonia Solution 9.5%, there are no other details, anyone know if this is the correct type of ammonia?

...and breathe...

dunno about the rest of your questions but I know the answer to this one - this is the ammonia I used for my cycling - its fine :good:

Cheers mate, do you know what ratio to water to use (65l tank)?

I should probably start a seperate thread for the sealant probably anyway.

Backtotropical wrote this the other day - did the calculations with my fish atnk size and it was exactly the same as the amount I had been using - wish I'd known about this formula before cos I spent ages counting drops and ml's and litre and nearly drove myself mental!!!

Ok. 20 UK gals = 90 litres = 90,000ml

You want ammonia to be arised to about 5ppm (parts per million), so:-

90,000ml / 1,000,000 x 5 = 0.45ml (desired ammonia level in tank)

Your solution is 9.5% ammonia so:-

0.45ml / 9.5 x 100 = 4.7ml (amount of solution to be added to tank to raise to 5ppm)

Hope this helps. :good:

Cheers.

Going by that then for a 65l tank.

65,000ml / 1,000,000 x 5 = 0.325

0.325 / 9.5 x 100 = 3.4ml

Not sure how I'm going to measure exactly that much!

looks about right - go to a chemist and ask for 5ml syringe for dispensing liquid medicine to children - they cost about £1.25! - Job done :good:

Take the tank back mate, last thing you need is it giving away, killingfish and trashing your furniture, and if you seal it yourself and it goes wrong you will feel even worse!
