A little while ago I watched a youtube video and I can't find it now. After watching the video I bought a bucket of Seachem Matrix, as well as Purigen. I also have Quick Clear Pads from Fluval as well as their Fine Filter Pads. I also have a ton of foam pads and Fluval ceramic rings.

I have not cleaned the filter in a year. I decided to move and it's just taken WAY longer than I expected. My tank is 90 gallons and basically just a huge nano tank. When I reinstalled it at the new house it was dirty but nothing like what I have seen on youtube vids.

So my question is...

In what order should I put this stuff in the canisters? Like what should go on the bottom, middle, and top...

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Everything is customizable to your preference in reality. You just have to take the direction of the flow of water in consideration when positioning your medias.

This is the suggested Factory stack.

Stage 1 (Top): Coarse Foam. This is for mechanical filtration, removing large debris and particles from the water.

Stage 2: Bio-Rings (likely Fluval BioMax). These are for biological filtration, providing a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and break down harmful ammonia and nitrite.

Stage 3: Ceramic Rings (possibly Fluval Pre-Filter Media). These primarily provide mechanical filtration to trap finer particles that the coarse foam might miss. They also offer some surface area for biological filtration.

Stage 4: Ceramic Rings (again, possibly Fluval Pre-Filter Media). Further mechanical filtration and some biological filtration.

Stage 5: Fine Filter Pad (likely Fluval Polishing Pad). This is for mechanical filtration, removing very fine particles to polish the water.

Stage 6 (Bottom): Carbon (likely Fluval Carbon). This is for chemical filtration, removing odors, discoloration and dissolved organic pollutants from the water.
