Ive had my 55 gallon tank running for quite a few months now and one of my bala sharks started to display signs of ick about five days ago i started to treat the tank with anti ick medicine and i was wondering how long i should countinue to treat the tank. the tank has been at 8-degrees and all water paremeters seem to be fine.

thanks in advance

This depends on the medication itself and the recomended dosage on the bottle. You MUST follow the directions / dosage on each individual med.
Follow the instructions on the bottle.

8degrees temperature? I hope you mean 80 :)

With anti ick as danny says just follow what it says on the container usually its something like treat every 48 hours and then treat for the next 48 hours after the ick has appeared to have gone.

Did you remove the carbon from your filter as it will take out any medication you put in ;)

heh yes my tank is at 80 :)

and i did remember to remove the carbon from my filter

i treated the tank according to the directions basiclly like what william said the every 48 hour thing. the signs of ick have been gone for about 3 days now so i think im going to be in the clear :) im gonna do a water change now and put some fresh carbon into the filter thanks alot for the advice

That sounds perfect I'm really glad everything is sorted for you  you can probably lower the temperature of the tank after you do your change, to about 76-78 or so but thats not really essential. :)

Glad to hear all is working out.
Sorry I forgot to mention about the carbon. daaaaa. slipping in my older years. LOLOLOL Thank William for picking up the slack.
Danny

You won't want to lower the temprature, as the lower it is, the better for the ich. You actually need to raise the temprature ( a bit at a time ) , as ich struggles in higher tempratures. I turned mine up so the overall temprature was about 4 degrees higherand it worked wonders along with the medication.

Yes sharkey, his temperature had been at 80 degrees initially - perfect for combatting ich. He got the problem sorted and I then suggested it would be a good idea for him to lower his temperature again as fish aren't best kept at close to their maximum viable temperature.

Oh right, I was unaware the problem was actually sorted, so yeah, once it is sorted it's fine to bring the temp. back down to what it normally is.
This still should be down slowly ( a degree a day or something ) , as drastic drops / raises in temprature can affect our wet friends !! :)
