Need advice on potential breeding

I would personally not breed. Breeding is a cool experience, but you need to have the proper equipment.

That case you have them in is to small for a single betta, let alone trying to breed them - they need a bigger tank.

Besides, do you have a plan for the fry if you decide to breed them?
Agreed.

Your male has built a nest, not a particularly strong one, but that is a nest.
I think what Salty was trying to explain is that Betta's are often advertised as this hardy fish that will live happily in a little cup with no stable heating and filtration which simply isn't true. I'm sure she didn't mean to come across in an aggressive manner, she's extremely passionate and by text format that cant be expressed.

Their current housing is on the small side and isn't really fit for purpose. Yes, a larger, cycled tank for them each with a heater is what they need, but you know that now.

I'd advise against breeding them if you don't have the time, resources and attention to give them. It's a long process that requires alot more than you'd think. My advice would be just to upgrade their tanks and enjoy them as they are. It honestly takes up as much time, money and energy as raising a child, difference is you can have a hundred at a time!

Hope I've helped you, slightly

Thanks @Salty&Onion and @PheonixKingZ for input, and others ! I probably wasn’t going to breed them until I sought advice, as I said. I think the opportunity was foggy at best but I still got a little excited. thought about if it went well, bringing them to a local family owned fish store for sale, aside from keeping a couple. Probably not a great plan, but then again, what else do others do with their fry out of curiousity?

I most certainly would love to give them more, and have been looking into options for us and them. As I said; I had a really nice tank that I loved and it just became too much so I am trying to contain myself and go slow. Keyword trying. (attached, rip, in loving memory:-()

Verdict: not going to breed. But still interested in advice and info so thanks!!

How about the ten gal you have? Set one of them up in there, a ten gallon is a perfect size for a betta, and not an overwhelming tank to maintain, and you haven't gone mad going out buying huge tanks or crazy expensive fish, just using what you already have to upgrade the fish you have :) Then if you notice an improvement in how the one in the ten gal is (and I think you will, they're not a super active fish, but they do enjoy a chance to stretch their fins!) then look for another ten gallon for the other one.
Maintaining two ten gallons is a lot easier than dealing with tons of fry, I promise you :)

As for what people do with their fry, depends so much on what fish they keep and what people in their area want. I wanted to keep guppies, but I know their reputation for breeding, so I checked my LFS would be happy to take the fry once they'd matured enough to sell. But I still ended up buying more tanks, just to house them and separate them by sex until they'd matured enough to go to the LFS, and it did turn into more of a chore than a fun hobby after a while. Scaling that back now. But if he'd said he wouldn't take fry, I wouldn't have bought my original guppies, I'd have just picked something else.
