Need advice on potential breeding

Hi all,

semi new to the forums, Been keeping fish for a couple years. Have had a few betta and kept them for some time. Had gotten out of it and (am not looking for judgement on my “setup”, but—) have a male betta and a female betta in separate 1-2 gallon hurricane globes with live plants at room temp (prettt steady 74•) feeding worm style bettamin, and fish are active and happy.

I did not get them with the iiinntteeennnttiooonn of breeding them, But have noticed that the female is extra vibrant, full belly and white speck on her bottom. Coincidentally, my male has started making what I’m thinking may be a tiny bubble nest. They seem pretty healthy and I have some spare tank/heater supplies and such. I have never bred them before but have read a lot about it and feel like I could, if they’re presenting this opportunity so blatantly.

my question is pretty vague, but anyone that’s bred their bettas have any advice for an unprofessional as me? Any luck or chance of doing this at my room temp or will I have to find a heater? I tried to capture my bettas and their surroundings in pictures to see if this is a bubble nest, female is not easily visualized. Again, I don’t have a super duper set up. But I am curious if anyone would see this as an opportunity and take it If they had the means, and if so, what advice do you have? (I have a bigger tank to breed them in that I can set up, but I won’t unless I get some sound info) Also I pictured a rim without the bubbles as a comparison.

You're actually keeping a betta in a small vase without a heater and a filter? Bettas need a minimum tank (yes, a tank and not a vase) size of 2.5 gallons although the more the better.
To answer your question, it does not seem to me like your male built a bubble nest and wants to breed and females will always be fat and full of eggs when in season.
Why do you want to breed them?

I know the difference between a tank and a vase, but that may have not been clear as I may have interchanged them by mistake. and am aware that I would need to give the male and eggs/fry much more room than this. Which was why I made it clear I wasn’t looking for responses such as that. I used to have betta with heater and filter and to be honest, these guys appear to be doing much better where they are. While I understand better is not always best, they are in 10x bigger and more maintained containers than when I bought them, and they are acting healthy, active, and happy.

I didn’t realize females would just be full of eggs all the time, so I did learn something. I kinda figured I was looking at a window of time that would be gone a week later. THIS is why I came here, because I don’t know stuff like THIS.

edit: also what do you then define as a bubble nest and what about the image does not show you that he has been bubbling about?

I don’t have a purpose to breed them besides being very interested in observing and caring for them, and responsibly homing them afterward.

When he comes, look at green quote in his signature box.
Basically by moving them into the vase from a tank with better environment you meddled into their needs thinking they will be fine, but they're not as ammonia and nitrite from the vase's water won't be removed and if water will get too cold, they will get sick and die.

I'm afraid for breeding you will need at least a ten gallon aquarium, cycled before you add the fish

I wasn’t intending on this to become a discussion about my betta’s environment, but I realized the pictures did make them look rather small and I may be wrong in estimating how much water is in these globes, I’m not sure. So I took another picture to clarify.

so you mean to tell me that everyone that’s ever kept their bettas alive (and not seemingly unhealthy) at 74 degrees for years was doing it all wrong?

it’s not that I don’t want to do the best for my fish. I had a 60 gal tank with filters and heat, all natural decor and plants galore months ago and nearly broke my foot trying to clean it, then became pregnant and was so sick I couldn’t even be in the same room with the thing. Ended up giving it away after a LOT of money spent on a hobby I enjoyed. I’m trying to get back into the hobby now and really don’t want to jump in too deep right away. ***NOT*** an excuse to do this horrible thing to fish as you let on that I’m doing, just felt like I needed to be understood a little here.

@Salty&Onion I’m also not sure what you mean by they were in a better environment before because they were swimming in a literal cup of their own pee.

@JuiceBox52 I believe I do have a spare 10 gal tank, thank you for the advice.

74 F is on a little lower side, some bettas may survive, some may get ill, but it does not mean they're happy as you are depricing them of their natural requirements and they are tropical fish.

thank you. I’m not necessarily feeling “picked on”, but I’m sure there’s a synonym for it that doesn’t make me sound like I feel small in this situation.

so you never did answer my question, as my male betta has been spending a lot of time on that side of the globe and the bubbles have been becoming more plentiful only in his globe, even if he is not looking to mate, are these at least from him? I’ve seen some pretty small bubble nests from betta but wasn’t sure if this was one.

I'm not very sure, they can make bubble nests out of boredom (thus in a small tank) or they're happy or want to breed.

I would personally not breed. Breeding is a cool experience, but you need to have the proper equipment.

That case you have them in is to small for a single betta, let alone trying to breed them - they need a bigger tank.

Besides, do you have a plan for the fry if you decide to breed them?
