Nearly Boiled My Fish

I also wonder if as stated earlier that heaters don't normally break or go faulty, how many actually do and we just don't hear about them.
I mean someone could have a faulty one and just go out and buy a new one and never ever mention it on a forum because they think it is just one of those things, so how common is it?

honestly,

in my 25+ years in this hobby i can not recall ever having a heater fail me or malfunction, and i dont typically buy "top of the line" heaters, kind of middle of the road,

i have some heaters over 20 years old currently in operation....sometimes i have not used a heater for over 5 years, and when i pop them back in a tank they fire up again just perfectly,

the only heaters i have really disposed of were ones that were not submersible.....gee im showing my age here!

Well seeing as I have a few broken/faulty ones how do you dispose of them because it says on one box not to throw in the bin, so where do you throw them?

The manufacturers are supposed to have a free disposal policy for devices like that if you feel like bothering them.

Bit of an update:
I got an email this morning from TetraTec, they say they are sorry for my misfortune and asked the details of tank size, where it was in the tank, how it was positioned and what thermometer I am using.
What I found interesting was they wanted to know what position it was in, this may clear up the upright or diagonal theories too.

So I'll let you know the outcome.

Update:

I got a reply from TetraTec this morning, they apologized for my misfortune with the heater and said the details I had given met with their recommendations and said it was unusual and the first time they had heard of one of their heaters failing like this.
They are sending me a pot of fish food a good will gesture.

Well done. Did they say anything about the position of the heater?

Hi snazy, no but I made a point of saying I had it diagonal and asked if that was right but they never replied to that part, but funny enough I was looking in an AquOne heater booklet earlier and they shown the heater in a uptight position but that might be to make it look neater I don't know.

Many years ago I had a Visatherm one go which died - failed to heat up, which is a brand name one. I have anecdotal evidence that a relative of mine gave up fishkeeping some years back when their's failed "on" and boiled the fish.

I cant really say anything about that because I dont and never have used that filter!

Sorry, my mistake! I know that you are its just me having a bad day with typing the right thing!

I use the SuperFish mini heater 25 *c
