This is something i have been concerned about for quite a while now. My pond has been maturing for quite a while now, and early on in the year frogs settled into the pond, layed a huge load of frog spawn, which then hatched out a month or so ago, and now the pond is full of tadpoles which are all healthy and swimming around everywhere. There are also loads of other critters in the pond too like bloodworms and many others critters which i do not know the names of- in general though, the pond is thriving with life.
The problem is is that i have noticed there have been a lot of frog deaths in the pond over the last 3 or so months, i have counted about 8-9 or so dead frogs in the last 2-3months (all adult frogs) in the pond (all of which have been taken out). There are live and healthy adult frogs in the pond, every night you can hear them singing in the pond, but i don't understand why some frogs are dying?
The pond is around 3200 or so gallons and its deepest part is just over 4ft deep. The pond has filtration and a waterfall, but it has not been left to run constantly yet (just turned it on and of a couple of times to make sure it works), the water was never dechlorinated in the pond when it was filled up last year after we finished digging it. The pond has lots of plants, and i have never used any chemicals in or near the pond or garden in general like pesticides/herbicides etc. The pond also has no fish in it at the moment.
There aren't any symptoms on the dead frogs in particular, all were just lying stiff and dead on the bottom. A couple of days ago my fiance and his brother found a frog floating upside down (but still alive) in the pond, so they took it out. I inspected it and i noticed that one of the frogs eyes was bloody and as i poured some fresh dechlorinated water over it (the frogs skin looked quite dehydrated), its injured eye came out. I think this was a physical injury the frog had got and was not a desease thing as the wounded eye was quite bloody. I put the frog in a large saucer of water in shady area in the garden next to the pond so it could rest and stay wet, but by the next day it was gone (i don't know if it survived or not). I'm not sure if this frogs problems are in anyway related to the other dead pond frogs cause of deaths.
Whats killing the frogs ?
edit: i appologise if this topic would be better of in the amphibians and invertebrates section of the forum, but it is a pond related thing i think none the less.
