My Tanks...some Of Them Be Round!

Wow! Love all the pics of your tanks! How do you get time to do them all? :D Your puffers are gorgeous! I want some but I'm not allowed to set up another tank as we already have another on the way.

We're getting a 30L (I think) Biorb from my auntie and uncle because they don't want it any more and I plan to modify it so your posts have been really helpful! I'll maybe put sand or fine gravel in there and then a cave and some plants as we will use the tank as a breeding/nursery tank for our Kribs. They bred in our community tank and the fry hatched a few days ago and already we've went from about 100 fry to 20-30 :( Hopefully when we have them in the Biorb, we won't lose as many.

We think that mum and dad might have eaten some as it is there first time but they get quite annoyed at the other fish too so the extra stress probably won't help matters!

I'll probably start a forum when I set up the Biorb as doubtless I will need help every 5 minutes! :S

Keep us posted!

Claire

tryed to send this msg to you but it wouldn't work so ill post it hear instead lol

i went out and baught a baby biorb the otherday as im new to fish keeping and thought id start at the bottom and work my way up, how ever after reading peoples oppinions on baby biorbs think ive started to far at the bottom lol and i wish i baught the next size up biorb now lol i wasn't planing on keeping any big fish for a 1st just maybe some neons or a single male betta fighter. i've since been told that my tank is still to small for iver of them :( i know you owned a baby biorb with neons whats your opinion? and i saw the one pic of how you set it up don't supose you have any more? and any other advice on setting it up properly would be great thanx jenny. i don't plan to keep the baby b long it was just a starter kit for me realy! to see if i take to keeping fish etc if i do i would like to get the biorb life 60 net and try make it as marine life as poss :)

OK here goes...

imho baby biorbs are really only suitable for shrimptopias.

When I first got one I tried to keep no less than 3 bettas alive in it and sadly failed each time. I modified to sand, an internal filter and green neon tetras successfully BUT that was only because the tank was mature (over 6 months old) and so was the internal filter. I would never try this in a brand new biorb.

I would highly recommend you return the baby biorb and exchange it for a 30L one. This is FAR more suitable for a betta and would be ideal for what you want...sorry to be a negative head.

I'll pm you more info :D

My 90L marine tank is coming on nicely

:D

The F8 tank is going through a transitional phase at the moment...I am probably going to reinvent it with new substrate (slowly removing the sand to get rid of the old plant substrate under the silver sand) and plants and a possible lighting upgrade but not sure what as yet.

Muldoonican is still smiling

He's been on a bit of a diet as he was getting too portly

Mickey is still a bit camera shy annoyingly, but here's an FTS

The Rekord 60 has been thriving nicely on a basic set up for the remaining community fish I kept when I transformed their tank to coldwater

The crypts are much fuller now so I'll get some new shots done :D

Thanks hun! :D

Can't wait to rescape the F8 tank and do something with the DPs biorb too as that needs a fresh rescaping really :D

Nice tanks man I am getting my 10 gallon for a pair of dwarf puffers, btw it is imperial gallons, so does that mean i can have 3??? Also can you feed puffers small earthworms if they are washed??

5 gallons per puffer is my working rule :D Not worth pushing it imho as there will be aggression.

You can deffo try them with small earthworms, but they will need to be the size of bloodworms if they are dwarf puffers esle they won't fit them in their mouths! :D

A few more tank updates for you all :D

The F8 tank has gone through a refurb but is still a work in progress. It was getting quite a trial with the planting substrate kicking up a right load of silt if disturbed...
This is what it looked like when I scooped it into a bucket...maybe you'll understand why it needed to come out!

More plants will be part suspended in the water and I'm going to try more anubias and java fern again to see how they go with more new moss balls

they look fantastic, you have done an amazing job!

absolutely amazing! love the marine tanks and the puffer tank

amazing! :good:

My goldies spawned earlier this year and I managed to save one of the fry from being gobbled by greedy adults. it's under 2cm long but will be going in it's own tank in the very near future. I hope that means I'll be able to get better pics, but here's a couple I managed today...

Slate blue like its mum, with a nice double tail. Not sure if it's got a dorsal fin yet or if it takes after it's ranchu father :D

Very nice tanks. I am super jealous. I have a question. I see you have alot of round tanks. What is the reason for round tanks? Are they better for veiwing the fish? What advantages/disadvantages over rectangle tanks. The reason I ask, I am getting my daughter a tank and I like the looks of your round tanks.

Ah the round tanks are Biorbs and loads of people hate them

Personally, if you ignore the instructions that come with them (awful they are) and cycle the tanks fishless and then stock lightly with small slim bodied fish, I think they make a very nice aquarium and I've had mine running for a long time without any deaths at all :D

I'll pm you more info, but there are a few drawbacks to them...

I like the magnifying effect you get from these tanks as you get more detail when you look at the fish, some don't like that, but it's quite funny when the optical illusion makes fish look like they vanish when they swim off to the side.
Access is limited, but still manageable.
The ceramic media supplied with these tanks looks awful but does a good job for housing good bacteria. I changed mine to pea sized gravel and it's easier to clean and looks better. I even modifed a couple of my tanks to run with internal filters and sand.
You'll struggle to keep plants that need to be planted as the filtration creates constant water flow through the substrate which many plants don't like. However, if you stick to plants that require tying to bogwood or rock you'll be fine - anubias and java fern come to mind, and then there's also moss balls that are great!

In short, if you want big fish, don't choose a Biorb or Biube. If you like smaller fish then maybe these tanks are for you. Whatever you do though...don't fill them with goldfish! :D

Pm on it's way :D

It seems I can't pm you just yet as you are a new member :( Do you have an email address? I can't post some of the info here I'm afraid.
