I've seen lots of people talking about female betta communities, and I have a great one, so I thought I'd share a bit.

First this is the whole tank. You can see it has many many hiding places at all levels. I keep the water low because when it was full, the hiding spots were gone at the top and if someone ventured up there it was bad news. Now it is just low enough to have sanctuaries everywhere. This could definately be down with better decorations, but even with tacky stuff as long as there are "getaways" it works.

They still bicker, but not to a dangerous point. It also took me awhile to find the right combonation of girls to live in there. I have three who were voted off and now live on their own.
Here's some of the girls...

The last thing that I do is keep the filter going a little higher than you would want. This was they don't have the option of staying still in the open and fighting. If they want to rest, they go in a pot or a cave. The majority of the squabbles that go on are chasing and a nip or two.

One more of the girls...I didn't get good pics of all of them, but you get the idea :)

Thanks Silver! It is pretty tacky looking, it does have a few real plants, but the majority are fake. I don't want to worry about a plant dying and creating an area without hiding spots. Plus this tank is next to my bed, so no one really sees it and it accomplishes what I need it to do so I like it!

hiya Sorrell, just wondering, how many females have you managed to get to all live happily together in there ? (well, other than their lil bickering games).

and how big is the tank ? it looks great!

and now that im fastly becoming addicted to bettas, i am seriously considering a female betta tank.

its just a shame that i dont have my own house, cus i know that i wud become the mad fish lady with loadsa betta bowls everywhere!!! im hooked, i have an empty 10" tank just sat on the side at the moment, and almost brought a green double tail betta today, to go into that tank, even though it isnt set up!

the betta addiction has began!!

Hi caroline, my tank is a ten and it has 5 females. I wouldn't go less than 3 to spread out the aggression. Four is supposed to be a magic number, but I had a weaker one in there and three strongs, so I added a second weak and now it's fine.
If you do this I would make sure you have back-up bowls because there seems to be a lot of trial and error. -_-

hi again, thanx 4 the advice Sorrell, its just hard work convincing my parents that im not addicted, just a fanatic. lol.

i currently have 2 females in a community tank, as the whole living with the husband thing didnt work as well as the shop sed it would!

they bicker abit, but is it worth trying a third to see how they get on ?

Definately, you don't want to ever have just two females as in general one will be stronger and chase or pick the other to death. If you can spread the aggression around that's good.

its interesting to find these things out!

i had kept 2 female bettas in a community tank b4, but they always got on, i think they had been brought up together straight from birth!

im hopin that i can go to a place tomorrow and mayb try and find a female betta that is a different colour to the 2 i already have, as mayb its the fact their the same colour that causes the bickering.

i know when i had 2 orange tailed guppys they killed any other fish that entered the tank that was orange.

it only took them 30 minutes to kill an orange sword tail with a black sword and orange body.

i hope that the two females i have at the moment will behave themselves abit until i get another girlie to join them!

am i right in thinking your female community betta tank is roughly 24" long, 12 deep and 12 wide ? if so, i may well change mine that is this size into a female community tank, as i just cant get enough bettas at the moment! im hooked!

im just glad i have a strong minded bf who stopped me gettin a green double tailed male today, as i havent got a tank set up ready for one, and even if i had, i dnt really have the space, as i like to have the main tank, 1 betta tank, and then a fry tank in my room! and if would have meant moving the babies dwnstairs to replace their tank with another betta tank!

Thanks for the advice Sorrell, I might have to get a few of those pots for hiding places because I just started a female betta community tank. How many would you recommend for a 12 gallon? I have 3 in there currently and they are doing great.

I really think that it depends on the hiding spots that you provide, and the fish's temperments. Like I said earlier, have a back-up plan because not all of them will work. As freshmike said yesterday, you'll know pretty quick if there's gonna be problems. I don't think there can be an exact number given, I've found it to be a guess and check process with my girls.
