My Puddle

The wee #28### comes out and swims around, so I may get an opportunity to net him.
I have read that if you put the rock in freshwater it can force the mantis out. At the moment it's hiding.

Try cutting the neck & top inch or so of a soft drink bottle and inverting it so it sticks down onto the main body.

Put something meaty like a mussle in as bait and place in the tank at night - makes quite an effective trap.

When you catch him see if your LFS want him back as some people do keep them!

Just saw this! Mantis shrimp! glass breakers!!!

Some are gorgeous though like the peacock. Make sure you get the #28### out!

That will most likely kill the mantis and cause die-off on the rock. People do keep these animals as pets so I encourage you to give it the opportunity to be kept by such a person rather than just killing it. Jets of carbonated water also work well to get things out of rocks while only doing local damage to the rock, but again it will likely kill the mantis...they are actually quite sensitive animals in some ways. You can try a trap if you want, but don't get your hopes up; they are rather a lot better at problem-solving than the average hitchhiker invert.

Also, glass breaking is greatly exaggerated in hobby lore. Many people keep the small guys like yours in glass tanks without issue.

Surely he simply represents an excuse to set up a nice 60l acrylic and cater to your MTS.

I think the wife would have something to say about that. I have aquarium paraphernalia everywhere.

GGtank that video is brilliant. The refuge is as entertaining as his reef tank. It should have been on display as well.

Donya the shrimp has gone into hiding. I'm wondering did it get sucked into my internal but it is a strong swimmer. If it appears again ill make inquiries with the LFS to rehome.

I'm messing with scape at the moment.

So it 12 days since I added my cured live rock. No indication of any ammonia and nitrite. So can I add a few clean up crew now?

Or should I wait for some algae to form first?

Just need to raise my salinity to 35ppm.

oh this is the exciting bit :) looking forward to how your tank develops

what are your plans for stocking?

Well I will see what my LFS has for clean up crew. Might pop down tomorrow. Obviously keep the numbers low initially.

Thinking of some

Hermit crabs, blue or red legged. I think I favour the red legged.
Nassarius snails
Trochus/ Nerite snails
(Any suggestions most welcome) .

Later on I would like to add a shrimp.

Its strange I haven't even thought about fish yet. I have been stewing over the technical side of a saltwater setup that stocking has taken a back seat  . Once I get some CUC in, I need to think about fish and corals. Happy enough taking my time over the process.

If the red legs are scarlets and you plan on having a lot of corals, then this is an excellent choice. Paguristes cadenati is very quiet and slower, much less likely to trample delicate corals. Blue legs, on the other hand, are crazy active, fast, fun to watch, but a bit of a bulldozer in some ways. They'll run over anything very quickly. Electric blue hermits are the same way. Not that those two are bad, they're just more active and more clumsy. The scarlets also fight less and are less aggressive, so please don't mix them with the other two. Scarlet hermits are characterized by bright yellow eyestalks. There is another red species, but they are similar to the blue legs. They don't have a yellow eye stalk.

Nassarius snails are awesome. Make sure your snails aren't that big, though. Aim for snails that are like 1/2 to 3/4 in long at the shell. Anything bigger isn't really Nassarius vibex, but another species of Nassarius, often called Babylon snails. Great snail too, but much bigger and can kill small shrimp and fish. Mine never did this, but I had bigger fish and shrimp.

Trochus are nice. I liked mine. Stink like high Heaven when they die. I still have some original ones, though, so tough as nails. Nerites are not so great. I don't think they like SW all that much. They seem to be a marginal snail to me. I've heard that they like to take trips outside of the tank.

Awesome shrimps include Fire shrimp, skunk cleaners, etc... Some people like peppermints, I never really liked them. Camelback shrimp I've heard, are to be avoided. A pair of shrimps are really nice and there is NO reason why you can't have both a skunk cleaner and a fire shrimp, they don't fight at all and can be kept together.

Great feedback lljdma06.
