My Pond Reached 37 Degrees Today

I run a summer tub here myself. It is the dead of winter in this hemisphere so the fish are indoors now. At 37C, it is just too hot for any common fish to thrive. Unless you can get significant shade and cool that thing down, it is not a good place for any fish. On the other hand, if you can get the temperature to below about 30C consistently there are a few fish that could survive and thrive in it. I cool mine by two methods. First is the shade which helps a lot. The second method is to let water evaporate and provide cooling by doing so, just like perspiring helps. That is where my fountain / filter comes in. By spraying the water into the air, the water is cooled about 3C below the surrounding air temperature.
This is the tub in action.

You can make out the filter and pump in this picture.

lets just say it's not a pond, it's an old bath tub. and once this is established, those 37 degrees stops being a mystery, what remain a mystery is why you would call an old tub a pond and subsequently wonder why the water's boiling in mid summer quensland sun.

you wouldn't put a dog in a microwave oven, would you? or would you. let's assume you wouldn't then why would you put cichlids in that deep fryer?

i would like to know if there was a other reason fr joining this forum as judjing by your other posts you
seam to do nothing but put people down

please may i ask you to refrain from doing so as it is a family forum after all

mods delete this if needed

if it has a permanent cover and his temperature is monitered the a bath tub can work however

i agree yes the metal does pose a problem but this can be easily be avoided by using a bit of pond paint

maybe i qouted in the wrong thread as his other comments arnt polite

sorry to hijack this thread

but from what ive seen on another forum it is all written in straight talking slightly rude comments

and thats the exact reason why this forum has a nice atmosphere as its relaxed

sorry rant over

There is No need to apoliogize. :good: Where All a Family here after all :)

But Gurlgar.

the main thing is It'll proberly be safer / cheaper to buy a plastic pond ( even a kiddy pond may actuly work (3ft height 12ft acorss? mabye bigger :p?

Pipe Dream my definition of pond, a container that is outside buried in the ground and is big enough to house some fish.

I did not mean I was going to put any fish in at these temperatures i'm not a fool, I am going to build a permanant cover that will shade it through the whole day, I will have my fountain hooked up to help with cooling and it is buried in the dirt. Right now the pond is sitting in DIRECT sunlight for half the day hence the temperature.

Pretty sure this bathtub is made of porcelain aswell, it has had fish in it from the guy I got it off for years and they had never had a problem.

Why would I pay for a plastic pond off ebay when I got this tub for free?? Would anyone not take it if it was free?

To run the filter isn't very hard as its a big cannister pond filter that you bury in the ground next to the pond and run a water pump in the pond with a hose going to the filter then the outflow back into the pond or fountain by another hose I don't see how I couldn't run a filter???

So hopefully I answered everyones questions :) oh also never planned on putting koi in there as they get way to big and we can't even get them in Australia i'm pretty sure.

well, i cant wait to see some pictures, and i think that electric yellows, or some blue malawi fish would look great in there, is the tub white?

Yeah its white got abit of algae growing though already from being in the sun so much lol

i certian would'nt take it. But thats me.

im Just saying there may be harmful Particals within the bath tub.

YOU Can get Koi in Austrailia. But you'll need an Indoor Pond? Something like that.. But even goldfish will outgrow a 75 gallon bath tub.

If i remember right. If you buy the right materials you may actully be able to build a pond from scratch for cheaper.

Only sharing my opionions with you. Im not saying "GO BUY A NEW POND" if thats what i sound like. But yes.

add some Aquairum safe type of plastic and sealment so your 100% its pretty much safe. It proberly only cost around $40? cheaper then that.. I Dont do dollar's so i wont have a clue. :good:

Good luck anyway.

Even if its porcelain not steel?

and yeah I THOUGHT koi might be banned here or something cause i've never seen them being sold here or heard of anyone having them here but no way I am going to put koi in there.

Still mate.

just to be on the safe side.

Like i've said to many others Im not good at cycling etc.

But anything metal related may contain particals harmful to fish's

if you go to a Garden center ask the peope there for some kind of plastic sheet witch is "Aquairum safe"

its normaly a blackish cover.
may work it may not work.

can we see a picture please? :good:

porcelain should be ok i would think, as long as it doesnt crack, as long as there isnt any metal on it as well. maybe someone with more smarts in the porcelain department could help you.
