my new tank; setting up.

Lookin' great paul. Watch out for that sand though, as someone has already mentioned that is a pretty deep layer of sand and if it is left un stirred for too long, you're going to get anaerobic activity in there which can lead to pockets of gas that will kill your fish.
If I was you I'd try and take some of the sand out and thin the layer up a bit.

ok on the subject of the depth of sand

it is 2" at the front, sloping down to 1" at the back;
don't ask me why i've done that 'casuse I have no idea :p

I have stirred it twice already and it will proberbly get evened out
when my plants arrive and I start planting, I think it gives an overall
depth of 1.75", which is the max I read somewhere (maybe even here)

Still waiting for the plants, but then we have the worlds worst postman.

Yah my tank looked like that at first even though I cleaned the sand a lot before I put it into the tank. I guess it's just not possible to get rid of all of it unless you clean it for 3 hours, which is hard when your washing it in waters around 40 degrees fahrenheit.

Wow, it looks deeper than 2". well if it's only that deep then you should be OK!! get yourself some fish that dig in the sand and it'll be even better!! :D

I have 2-3" of sand, and there is no Hydrogen Sulfide (the toxic gas that was mentioned) to be found in it. (If you have hydrogen sulfide the sand will bubble when you disturb it; mine gives of the ocasional mini-bubble). Once you get roots established in the sand, they bring oxygen down into the sand - saggitarius is great for this; I found that vallis had trouble getting established in the slightly Hydrogen-sulfide rich sand I had when I started the tank. Cryptocorynes are getting established slowly but steadily in the tank; one put out it's first daughter plant last week. My Amazon Sword did well; it took over the tank completely; I removed it because it was shading everything else.

I have that exact background on my 55! :D Its a great background

finally finnished :D
