I'm trying to convince my husband at the moment so I can change the gravel to river rock..I'll get thru to him some day...

They'd actually prefer sand or a smaller, rounded gravel. Larger gravel or rocks might damage their barbels.

"Quartz" gravel is very good for corys, its 1-2mm gravel that is very find and not sharp. Corys can dig in it without getting hurt.

Sand is also good but VERY messy compared to something like silver quartz gravel.

I have sand in all of my tanks and it's not messy at all. I guess it depends on the fish, the sand and the keeper.
