Hi guys!!!! today i picked up some guppys and they are awesome, i have a question about aquarium salt, when do i have to put it in , like once a month or somthing, pls tell me i will get pics up soon! :D

You use some every time you find ich in the tank but the rest of the time salt sits on the shelf with the other medications. Guppies are fresh water fish.

Why does hi link go to another site and not a pic? is it spam?

It is a game site, not a competitor, so I have left it without an edit. Lots of our members have links to completely unrelated topics in their signature area Omega.

yes but i heard most fresh water fish need aquarium salt and it makes them live better, which they are.

You will continue to hear that fish do better with salt if you keep listening to salt salesmen like your local fish shop. That does not make it true.

they are living better they were under alot of stress when i bought it, they are doing better and i have a male and a female, i didnt know that one was a female when i bought it, i could not tell so i will have some fry.

'some fry' try a good 7 - 15 fry every 30 odd days, give or take. I would suggest you rehome one or the other, return it to the LFS and have a good read up on guppies.

Salt makes no difference, guppies are fresh water fish, I am sure they wouldn't appreciate salt over the long run :good:

Oldman is the guppy pro!

You are such a pessimist Beth. This tank never has less than a gross overload of fish except the first week after I remove all adults.

This is the result of a single drop of mollies where most survived with just the female to keep them company and, I am sure, eat a few.

Freshwater fish appreciate fresh water. Enough said?

Guppies can drop between 1-200 fry, depending on age, every month. If they mate with a male once they can drop for 6 months without mating again, Nuff said.
I keep guppies myself and i am constantly selling babies from my 3 females. Plus depending on your tank size, and it would need to be about as big as mine(2ft), and whether you want babies or not, get 1-2 more females. This will stop the male from stressing her out by trying to breed 24/7.
Hope this helps.

Salt is not needed.

However salt dose help reduce stress levels and allow the internal organs to work easier.
This means that you can then have pore water quality but ok fish.

Best thing is to keep very good water and your fish will be happier and you never need salt!
