well, the anubias were a bit much so i went back to just the ferns.
tank is still kicking, happy and healthy.

i may be giving this set up to a friend, so i guess that means i will have a new project soon.
w00h00!

That looks like a 5 gallon tank to me that just has a one gallon display area. You always should count the volume of the sump when deciding on the stock levels.

^^ though sticking to fish/inverts that are suitable for a 1gal! I'm sure that's what you meant old man, but you know...just to make it clear.

That's right C101. No intent to put something that needs more swimming room. It works quite nicely in terms of water quality though.

nope, it is only 1g. the pic and scape just make it look bigger.

i am well aware of the total volume theory oldman, and have it all taken care of. thanks for the concern though.
there are a lot of misconceptions about sticking levels, and the "needed" amount of swimming space. not to mention the idea of certain fish needing to be in certain group sizes.
but as the entire concept of fish keeping is completely man made, none of these ideas are truely relevant.

WP are perfect.
bio-media surface area is ridiculously overkilled. (while majority of the bio media is not being used, it does help to stabilize the system with any rise of ammonia, and the filter cn be moved to a much larger display with no changes in the filter itself, so it works out in the end. i like to think long term)
total area of available swimming space is sufficient for the inhabitants.
and in the end, it is not a permanent set up. when i deliver the tank to my friend, i will also be setting up a 10g display for this filter, so the inhabitants can be moved over, and the 1g used for something else.

I had one of these little tanks a while back and although the tank was given to a friend, I had a solution for filtering it.

I just cut out a section of the hood and so a basket filter could hang on the side. The filter I used was an aqua-tech 5-15. It was too much for my betta so I cut the impellor blades down and added a prefilter sponge to the intake. Then used someone's ideas off here and cut part of a plastic cup and slid it over the output of the filter to deflect the current. It ended up working really well.

I know my post is sort of irrelevant and not as cool of an idea as the wet/dry filter of the OP's, but I thought I could post it for if anyone else had one of these little tanks and needed an idea how to filter them.

BTW, the end result looks really cool, That would be a really cool idea if were a saltwater tank too. Im impressed :good:

the shape of this particular tank, and placement of the hinge, wouldn't allow for any type of hang on filter. i had a couple lying around too. too bad though.
my next initial thought was a powerhead powered OHF, or mini canister, but between cutting the hood to fit the system, and building the actual filter, i decided that it would be much easier to just drill the tank and build a small wet/dry.

i was debating going with a nano reef, but would run into the same problem when trying to get a good light fixed to the top of the tank.
also, believe it or not, live rock is hard to come by in hawaii.

Just had a chance to catch up on this, its amazing! well done mate,
as for stocking i would treat it as a 1g as in pick suitable species for that size, just keep more of them as the total volume is higher and due to the filtration water quality will be good.

:D Hmmmmmm..... You gave me some good ideas for my 2.5 gallon tank in the basement.... I like your setup with the plants,
and Im curious to see what your stocking it with.

its just 4 green neons. they always hide when the camera comes out though.

hey, on your origional wet dryfilter the water was going through the filter floss first, I thought in my external filter it goes thru the floss last? but with the floss at the top because it goes the other way? of is my filter the wrong way round?

if i understand you correctly, youre asking about the media setup and flow.

most canister filters (external as you call it) flow from the bottom up, while wet dry filters flow from the top down.
with the canister, you would put your mechanical filter media in the bottom basket, and your bio-media above that.
your filter does not go through the floss last. it goes through the floss first, as it pushes upwards in the canister.

hope this answers your question
