My Journey - Fish Keeping

Hey,

Discus are still not going to be a good choice. Your friends tank must have a proven spawning pair of Discus. Angels and Discus will not mix well in a small tank, and neither will Discus and Rams. If you want Discus it will need to be a species only tank, with maybe a shoal of bigger tetras that won't get eaten (Red Eye for example.) You could also sneak in a shoal of Corydora if you wanted, but they would have to be sterbai. Again, as mentioned, most Pleco with try to get a taste of the slime coat on the Discus, and personally I wouldn't put a Pleco anywhere near my Discus. Don't know if the dimensions where already listed, but what are they? If you want Discus, this would be a good stock:

5 Discus
6 Red Eye/Black Skirt etc.
4 Corydora sterbai

The only thing I could suggest to you, if you want Discus, Angelfish, Ram, Dwarf Gourami etc. etc. is to get a bigger tank.

I am happy to leave out the angels for the Discus however I guess you are right I need a bigger tank than a 200L if I want to have Discus in a cmmunity tank :-( my friends tank (with the Discus pair) is bigger than mine *sigh* there goes my hopes of having a pair of Discus just yet

Thanks for all your advice DiscusLova :flowers:

Hi 'I Love My Fishes',. My gouramis haven't had babies as they get on with everyone in my tank except each other! :hyper: They avoid each other like the plague, Vera, the female just hangs around with my female platys! I love all the different types of tetra, i just keep the black Phantom and Black Skirt typs. The Phantom ones have got a gash of neon on their sides which looks cool. Britlenose plecs get to about 4-6 inches so not too big and i think, golden nugget plecs get to about 8 inches and peppermint plecs get to around 7 inches. You have loads of scope with all the different types of plecs, these are just my favourites, so if you went for a smaller variety like one of these, they would make a great community tank mate. Hope that helps! GRJ. :good:

Hi Spooky do you think the bolivian butterflys will get along with the blue rams if I have a m & f of each?

Hiya - wow you must have spent all evening replying lol.

I presume you mean bolivian RAMs ? They have so many names I cant keep up. I have never kept them together sorry, but I did once have my balloon (Small rams) with my large Bollivian RAMS and they were fine.

As you said, I would keep them paired though. My only concern might be the larger RAM bullying the other, but to be honest a full size german / blue ram isnt that much smaller.

My rams are great fish - I would recommend them as being a great community fish. Many others, like my gouramis did peck and hassle other fish, but the rams just get on with it and are full of charactor. They are great feeders, will eat anything, and dont destroy plants.

Good luck - its always good fun re-stocking :)

HI, have a look at my sig. all my barbs seem to get on with the rest of my stock.
The angel is 9 months old. he has'nt shown any intrest in my neons and as the barbs are in a large group they don't bother anyone.
Once my angel starts to take an intrest in my neons I think i'll swap him for a couple more gouramis

Brads

Great thanks Spooky :) I think I will get the both the bolivian butterflies (rams) and the blue rams

This is a good site for helping you match community fish with each other...

Thanks Honey G I will check it out I have done a fair bit of research and most text books/articles say i can keep these fish together because they are all of the same bio type but I think all research (theory) in fish keeping always need to be backed up by advice from people who have had experience with the fish.

I had a quick look at the link and looks like a great site for me to get further info off thanks again :)

Hey I love my fishies> Whenever I read you're posts it takes me twice as long because I keep looking at you're gorgeous photo

It's nice to come on here and see regular posts by the same people progressing in their hobby. And that you share your hobby with people around the world is encouraging.
We've read as you've named your new betta and so on. And now we get to see how your tank, which looks nice, is going to be stocked and made into a beautiful dwelling for some lucky fishies.
