My Guppy Fry Journal

I have acquired a yellow male guppy he's beautiful, i've not seen a full yellow one before! He has pink fins and a long pink dorsal fin.
I also have a half black female with an electric blue tail. They have settled in well and I would like to say my cobra female has taken a shine to the yellow male! She has perked up completely - she goes and sort of rubs up next to him I thought she was attacking him at first but she is following him everywhere
I'm glad I agreed to take them, I now have 3 males (guppy, 2 endlers) and 4 females (3 guppy and 1 endler) the rest are fry, I needed some colour. My friend has bred metallic blue guppies and red tuxedo guppies. I might get a striking red one for some more colour and give him the 2 oldest fry. If we swap regularly, it will stop inbreeding and adds new bloodlines. I'm no breeder extraordinaire lol I just like to have variety!

Here is the female, she's like half blond, half black and an electric turquoise tail which isn't captured very well on a phone cam!

Here's my new male. I never had a yellow before. His fins were pink but now they are yellow and his eyes aren't big black saucers like they were so he's calmed down. Hopefully he'll give me some fry :D

Very very pretty fish, I had a female that was identicle to that one but she did not make it after birthing her fry a couple of weeks ago, :-(.The male is incredible looking forward to seeing the babies!

Oh sorry to hear that. My lovely blonde female died shortly after I witnessed her having babies :( This cobra female is very slowly recovering.
Thanks his tails ragged but my friend tries to separate them so he came from a male only tank but the female was in his main tank and I think she's pregnant.
The males "went to work" with the females already, I can't wait to see the fry either. I wish I had a separate tank for the cobra female so she doesn't get mated with I don't think she'll survive another drop :(

So on monday, my 8 week old fry are going to their new home. I am keeping one of them-the one with the pattered white and red tail. The other 5 are going to the same woman who took the previous fry off me. It will be sad to see them go but it stops me being over stocked.
I got another male from my friend and he took one of my endlers. He is rainbow coloured. His body has a green shine, he has blue and yellow and a peach coloured tail.
My tank hasn't looked so busy and active in a long time-even the cobra female is zooming around.
I have taken a 5 minute video to share the hustle and bustle with everyone! I had just given them daphnia.

I just found a dead fry in the breeder trap :( It's tail was torn and it was floating upside down. I don't know if it was to do with the female who jumped in yesterday. I am left with 5. I am gutted as I waited so long for my cobra female to have fry. 3 of them have very pointed tails and 2 have normal tails-why do tails point? Is it a defect?
I have put them into the bigger trap and put my endler female into their trap as she is very square and her birthing tube is visuble. I never have fry from trapped females I always feel bad for them and let them out then find fry everywhere lol but here's hoping!

This morning I turned the tank lights on and had a look in the trap and nothing so I let the female out-then I saw movement. 4 very fat tiny fry! Then I saw more there are 6 I think. They still have very fat bellies and 2 of them are still sitting on at the bottom so they have not long been born. Now I am concerned as I moved the female out of the trap. I have decided not to put her back in and if she has more fry I will just catch them and put them in the trap.
6 seems to be my number, I never get more than that. The female endler was very young when I got her, she was the only female in a tank full of endlers so I can't wait to see what the fry turn out like!

Some very unusual things happening

I went away on wednesday and came back yesterday. My brother came over and helped me move my fish tank from the table which had started to split onto another one. I had emptied most of the water out and turned the lights off, had to unplug everything for a few minutes then plug it all back in. Filled the water back up added the tapsafe and checked the water-spot on.
This morning I wake up, turn the tank lights on and I noticed a few things.
My favourite full yellow male is missing, the female cobra who had the bent body after having her fry is missing, my fry with the bright red tail and fins is missing. I have just torn the tank apart looking for them, and behind the filter. Nothing. I don't know when they went missing, I should have done a headcount when I came back. So looks like the snails have been well fed.
I also found fry. I had 5 fry in the trap from my endler who had them on monday. I caught 2 more fry who look like they are not long born as they were sitting on the leaves with the fat bellies. I don't know where they came from. The only female who looks sunken in and very skinny is my 16 week old fry-is this possible? I have had many a female give birth so am familiar with what they look like after they have had fry and she fits the bill. She has no gravid spot anymore either.
The rest of the gang are swimming about quite happily. I am just so gutted for my yellow male :(

Hi NY, this sunken belly thing, I had this with all my shop bought guppies and is why I nearly gave up on them and joined the Forum. It was so disheartening, I hav'nt found the answer to this disease/condition so far. However I've had no problems since keeping wild strain Guppies so I will say no more for fear of stirring up a wasps nest !

I was told by the manager of a lfs that several years ago something called "Guppie Disease" swept through the hobby and they stopped stocking them for over a year. The symptoms sound the same...sunken belly, white stringy poop ! However I've never heard of this from any other source.

I know how you must be feeling, it nearly drove me blim blim.

Edit...it seemed to affect females worse than males in my experience !

Hey Pete. I find it only happens to females who have had fry then a few days later they put the weight back on and are fine. My poor cobra female never ever recovered. This 16 week old female has no gravid spot and is very skinny which would suggest she had these 2 fry I found in the tank but she's just a baby herself.
I will be going back to get another yellow male as I thought he was just gorgeous. I just need to wait and see what happens with the rest of them. They are fine, eating and very active.
My other fry are growing really well they are 9 weeks old, they have some lovely markings and I decided to keep them. There's 5 of them, 2 are showing gravid spots so are females, I thought they were anyway due to their size. 1 of the males has a gorgeous white tail with black markings, looks quite striking. The other males tail is white and red with black markings and the 3rd male is quite small he has a yellow tail with a black triangle shape in the middle.

How are your wild guppies getting on?

Ok, I scanned your postings and it seems I misread them ! I hope your small female recovers soon and pleased the rest are fighting fit and thriving. Your male Endler with the scarlet flashes on his tail is beautiful.

My Guppie colony is fantastic, I've got at least a hundred now from new born to sub adults. They get the usual quality flake and algae tabs, and fresh Daphnia, gnat larva, blood worm and bubbly green algae from my wildlife pond which is full of tasty little morsels. They seem to relish picking through it (especially the fry) and eat the lot.

I've got my freebie tank cycled and up and running and have started moving some of the males to give the females a bit of a break and young swordtails into it. Its looking good so far.

There are some really intresting colour pattrns emerging, a couple of them have stunning blue peacock eyes on their tails. A neighbour had jam jar full of young swordtails and Guppies of me last saturday and he is over the moon with them, he gets knocked of booze and ciggies so I'm well sorted  I know its bad for my health but my fish are safe as I only smoke outside

Tried several times to take photo's since we last spoke but their not worth uploading, its so annoying as its nice to share and get feedback from other members and feel I'm missing out on all the fun. must get a new camera sorted.

Congrats on Apollo getting pet of the month btw. Gosh I love that name ! :good:

Thanks :) he's my boy.
Aww that's good. Freebies are always the best and what a freebie you got! It's going to look awesome! You need to get some pics up!
Today unfortunately disaster struck again. I had to move the tank (again) to the front of the living room, the table I had put it on yesterday wasn't stable enough and the leg started to buckle. The one I have put it on now is solid. I had to empty the water again, turn everything off for a few minutes then back on again and my powder blue male with the peach tail is now missing. I noticed yesterday he was just hanging around and one of the females kept swimming around him. He was massive I have never seen a guppy so big. I don't know if it was the stress of the move but the heater was only off for a minute. The rest of them are fine.

My stats are:
ammonia - 0
nitrite - 0
nitrate - 30-40 (the colours look the same)
PH around 7

I just don't get it. Thats both the males I added last week that are gone :( gutted.

How strange...for one to go missing like that...two is just wierd !

Here's a thought...sorry if its a bit gory...the little conical snails that live in the gravel (I had a plague of them when I kept Cichlids) could the fish have died and they pulled the bodies under the gravel ! I had an Angelfish die suddenly in the night once and in the morning it was covered in them !

On a lighter note, I know you are very attached to your fish but you can look for some new little gems now. :)

Edit...Not sure what I did wrong for this reply to appear in same box, never happened before
