My rainbowfish have been in this tank for about 6 months, have doubled in size. They usually swim up towards me hoping to feed. Yesterday they started freaiking out! They are very close to jumping out of the tank any time I come close to the tank. They also all hide at the far side of the tank, when there is any movment in the room. They have never acted like this before. The only thing that has changed in the tank recently is new co2 bottles but I know the co2 is not too high...What could this be? I have not changed the filter recently, last time was 6 weeks ago (rena xp3 with mostly cermaic bio media.) It seems like only the rainbow fish and platies are freaking out, tetras seem fine.

Tank 90gallon, with 15 juvenile (2") assorted rainbowfish, 8 neon tetras(soon to move out of this tank-too small), 3 platies.

Ive had this tank set up and "cycled" for a year now. Water stats: ammonia=0, nitrite=0, nitrate=5, ph=7.1, KH=110, GH= 330, temp=25.3C. Tank is moderatley planted with about 1.9wpg and co2 added via do it yourself yeast and sugar. I use half RO water and half my city water for water changes. My GH is higher than I expected, perhaps I need a large (60%) water change. My city water is kh=110 GH=270.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

Regards

Fish wanting to jump out and hidng can be toxic water but your stats are fine.
When did you last perform a water change.
Any flicking and jumping.
What your loclation had any storms in your area.

Last water change was about 4 weeks ago. These fish are quite small and the tank is very understocked. Im in Edmonton, western Canada. No storms today is very clear sky. Yes they will somtimes jump if I move close to the tank. The do seem more hyper than usual. Right now, while there is no movment by the tank, they are 70% hiding in one corner of the tank, and the rest are swimming around looking hyper and nervous.

Im going away for 10 days tomorrow too, this is not good...I have a friend to feed them that is it...

You could be dealing with a parasite then.
Check the body over for excess mucas and bleached out patches, looking pale.
Any fish rubbing themselves on things in the tank, or swimming in a odd jerky movement.
Check the gills to see if there pale withe excess mucas on them, or red and inflamed.

No excess mucas and bleached out patches, none looking pale.
No fish rubbing themselves on things in the tank, The fish do seem a bit jerky because they are so hyper and are makeing quick movments. Gills all look normal, fish have full colour and all look healthy. I have not lost a fish in this tank in 8-9 months except for a neon due to heat... New wild caught barbs were added to the tank for only 10 mintutes about 4 weeks ago, before I relized they were to small for the tank. But as I said I see no signs of disease; I have looked very close. Wild caught barbs(AKA ; indian flasher barbs, denisons barbs) are now in another tank and growing RAPIDLY showing no signs of disease.

Ive taken out 25% of the tank water. It smells "normal". Im slowly adding only RO water until the tank is full...

Ive dealt with camalaneus(sp?) worms before. I think they are too short to show themselves when inside rainbowfish that are bigger than two inches (read thsi somewhere). I think I got the camalaneus worms from wild caught rainbows or barbs about a year ago. when my fish had camalenus before they didnt act like this at all...

I do have the dewormer LevamisileHCL that works wonders on worms in a tank in about 12 hrs, I could use it....my fish didnt eat for a few days after I used it before...

Wild caught fish can fetch things into the tank, I think you might be dealing with flukes.Signs are.Darting around.Flicking and rubbing.Gasping, or at the surface of the tank.Red to pale gills.Swimming in a jerky movement.Trying to jump out of the tank.Being lethagic and hiding away. Not eating, spitting things out of there mouths.Sores can be a sign on a fish body. Some fish can go thin.Young fish are more prone to flukes.http://article.dphnet.com/cat-02/flukes1.shtmlJust want to check that you havent got a new pet lately like a cat or dog.If they are showing no signs of flukes then.I would worm them again.Something wrong.

No new pets. I will continue to observe them but they do "seem" healthy and dont have any syptoms you described; only thing is nervous high speed movments...

Thanks again

Fish darting around tank means.
Bad water quality, toxic water, overdose of meds, to parasites.
See how they go for now.

Stray voltage in a tank can cause fish to dart.
Do a search on fish darting around the tank.

this may seem like a strech as well. but maybe your fish know your leaving and they dont want you to. i mean i know that sounds just stupid, but animals of alll sorts.... get attached my bunny knew when i was comming home and when i was leaving to go to work. my fish know when something is up. they are a lot smarter than they seem.. so maybe they are just acting wierd. or it could be some kind of water problem.
