My First Sw Tank

Now concerning the fish, I asked to see peoples sumps and central filter systems and was totally shocked at the under gunning that most of these places have for filtration, I mean in my books where I will really make the money is in selling my stock, and the various stuff to feed them treat them etc..., does it not make sense to make sure I have a good filtration system to keep my fish alive and not lose them to bad water quality in my storefront.

Most people on here use Live Rock for filtration (Berlin method) as long as you have enough for the size of the tank and enough water movement created by powerheads, then this and regular water changes are enough to maintain good water stability and quality. A good protein skimmer is also recommended :good:

is not the water system needed to purify the tap water to make it safer for sw, I am also looking into getting a sw dispenser where i have it plumbed in and it mixes the salt with the water and makes it the salinity im looking for

Sorry mis understood,
yes you need a good RO unit. I've recently found out myself these should be tested with a TDS (think thats what its called) meter to check they are working correctly.

Most shops don't put a lot of live rock in their fish sales tanks. Just enough to give them some shelter. They will be a royal PITA to catch if they are loaded with the correct ammount of LR for a FOWLR set-up. Bio-mech is how most shops run, i.e. a large sump with bio-media and a king sized protien skimmer, returning through a heater *if needed* and the mother of all UV units to prevent disease spread. :good: In the sump you would run a few internal filters to allow you to isolate any tank in need of treatment, so that you don't have to switch the UV off to treat a tank with an infection, nor treat the whole system, just the affected tank. Run the internal with carbon in for an hour before returning the QT'd tank to the main system and bin the media that was in it to prevent disease in the next tank that internal is used on later...

On a heating note, with any large fish room, it's cheaper to heat the room than it is the water :good:

All the best

Heating thats where geothermal radiant infloor heat comes in :shifty:

Provided we dont actually sell our house and the lot next door for a tidy profit we have a very interesting build in mind, I will make sure to post it when we do it :shifty:

I have totally misunderstood this thread, from the title it suggests that this is your first venture into saltwater and, as such I assumed you wanted help and advice, but This is obviously not the case, and you clearly know what you are doing, I'm not really sure what, if anything, you want from us.
so I shall take my leave from this thread and let you get on with it, as you clearly don't need an amateur interfering
I wish you all the best with your retail venture and hope all your plans are successfull :good:

IMHO I think you should change the thread title as it is rather misleading.

actually this is my first sw tank i set it up only 6 months ago, have never really done a tank before just did lots of study

dont be ashamed of offering advice friend :good:

I have learned that I can learn from anyone as everyone has something to contribute

take for example a sump I have absolutely no idea how to set one up  and would probably drain my tank if i tried one

so please dont feel that your advice is not needed nor heeded as the idea of the berlin system is new to me and i have never heard of this before so off to google i go

:good:
