My First Fish Aquarium And My Betta Is Chasing The Molly Or Platys Occ

Hey really helpful reply. But dav I dont have any bigger space to allot to a bigger fish tank. And I m a total rookie in handling fish, I brought the betta cos it was kept in a single jar one sixth of the size of my jar.. I felt sad for it. Ok I will add the filter next month what say. And then what should be done of the platys. I have another a bit smaller jar should I put them in that and leave the beta the big jar?
None of them should be in a space that small, especially without filter and heater. To my knowledge, they're also not fish that will ever get along particularly well.

Go back to the shop. Yell at the idiot who told you everything you listed in the first post. Return the fish, give them to a friend who has a tank, or buy a much, much bigger one, with all the accessories. Do this tomorrow, not next month. By next month they will all have long since died.

Btw I have transferred the betta to a 10 litre bucket and the platys remain im the bowl.

It's a good move to transfer the betta to the bucket but it'd be better if the other 2 fish get their own bucket too. Do read up in the Beginners' Resource Center and get a tank along with a filter, heater and dechlorinator ASAP. I know it's very frustrating to realise whatever you've done is all wrong but as long as you put in the effort to make the necessary changes you're good. All the best!

Yeah the platys are so relieved you can FEEl it. And the Betta is having a great time too. All calm n peace has been restored as for now. My neighbor is giving me her 20 litre Fish Tank now. I need your help in whether i should put betta first or the platys ? with that big tank plus filter will they still fight ?

20l is somewhat small for all 3 fish - the betta would be fine on his own in there, but he may be a particularly agressive boy and dislike the platies anyway, whatever size tank - some are like that. Whatever, it's certainly better than a bucket or a fruitbowl!!!

I would recommend seeing if you can take the platies back to the shop, and just keeping the betta in the 20l tank. They are a solitary species, and he won't get lonely, trust me.

When you get that tank, you need to get the filter cycled - this means growing 2 colonies of bacteria.

Then read this article

The first link tells you why you need to do what the 2nd tells you to do. This is the correct (and in my opinion, only) way to care for your fish, whilst the filter is growing its bacteria. Ask as many questions as you like, however daft you think they are. The people on this forum are excellent in helping newcomers to the hobby get the most from it.

thats good, i am so glad you are going to put the betta in a proper tank!! its not your fault that you did things wrong. you should never have been told that this was ok for fish!! if you need any further help or advice, we will all be happy to help.

L :good:

HEllo Everyone, I am glad to inform you that the fish have been given a new home, an air-pump and a filter (which i made my self checking from youtube.)

Now this tank holds 20 litres water, the dimensions are length 2 feet, breadth 1 feet and height 1.5 feet (m not counting the cover)

Anyways PROBLEM remains .. the Betta is still chasing the Platy, yes they are Platys. :-( ;) :/ :S ..Really it look me all day to do all this and still. I read that platys and Betta Not much of an issue. But look at my platys they just have stuck to the sides the aquarium and really scared. The Betta Chases them more aggressively in the big tank  .

i am seriously loosing my patience now. After Soo Much effort and begging and non stop abuses by my parents, who say you should be preparing for your professional exams which is in 1st november, I feel I had tried to give them a better life the betta and the platy. But I am not right am sure. Maybe they are just fooling around, maybe its good excercise for them . Alas I cant ruin anybody`s life for the sake of being Positive, even though they are fish and are served in most restaurants everywhere. Give me some options friends. I have a pond nearby , should I go and set the platy free there ? should I return it to the shopkeeper ? Money is not much of an issue (I Dont care if he pays me back or not).

I am crestfallen all I needed was a pal. but guess I am unlucky. I should be studying than doing any of this. You guys are really caring people , its not only your own wish... you are helping so many fish all over the planet from amateur treatment. Thanks a LoT  :) :good:

Poor you Crunch. You'll be fine. Concentrate on your exams and take the platys back. The Lock Man suggested the betta would be fine on his own so why not give that a go? Are you checking out the beginners resourse centre? Also there's a forum here just for particular species such as betta's. Or you could get a cat.....

The problem still remains that the tank is too small for the three fish you have. It's better, but it's still too small for them and the betta is trying to chase the other two out.

If you take the platies back to the shop, the betta should be fine by himself and all the fish will have a happier life. :)

Remember, you still need to do regular water changes until you've finished your fish-in cycle.

At first I thought this thread was a joke.....but it is good that the fish are in a bigger tank. I was almost scared :(

Great to hear you've got your tank and everything else. Do you know anyone you could give the platies to? I personally wouldn't want to give them back to the shop if you said they were in a worse situation there.

Hey All, when do you know that the fishing cycle is complete or not ?

also the filter i made is floating (somehow has air trapped inside) , how do i know whether its working or not? i will give you the details. i made it using the tutorial video on youtube.

I had to face some troubles like:

I didn`t get the aquatic wool and i used cotton instead of that. the person used gravel, our soil type is muddy and there is hardly any beach or gravel nearby, so i used sand after cleaning the sand for twenty times. PLus I add cut small piece of Scotch Brite (the dish cleaning hardened sponge remember) and some normal sponge. And the top layer is made of tissue papers.

Note: The air bubbles are only coming out of the aluminium pipe in the center, so that part is correct right ? the tutorial filter did not had no problem sinking, but my filter is floating on the water surface. I had to press a stone to keep it submerged. The air pump is supposed to create a low pressure and the water from the tank should go through the filter layers and then come out of the pipe in the center.

Also I am thinking of setting free the platys in the local pond, Since there isn`t much space there in the tank. Once i clear my exams and start earning big money am sure Gonna get an amazing aquarium.
NOw thats that but I am thinking of giving the Betta 4 hours time from now. If i find any bullying activity, Bye bye platys :shout:

You might want to give a link; I imagine there are a number of tutorials for making filters on YouTube. Certainly sounds like yours isn't working right, but I wouldn't know how to help, sorry. Not so good with the DIY. I think you're better ordering one online from an aquarium supply shop.

That would also kill them.

I think your best option is to find a reliable pet store to give them to.

Just make sure you do all your research before you do set up that amazing aquarium. It will take 6 to 8 weeks for the tank to cycle, so you'll need to do frequent water changes during that time. The only way to know where you're at in the cycle is to buy a freshwater testing kit.

Hey all guess you all are sleeping till now, its just the time zone thing. No problem my betta is a real possessive male. So went and returned the platys to the bum. That shopkeeper omg, I could write a story on him in shortt those fish are really unlucky. Anyways he said he will refund my money in the evening. I asked him all the things I learnt from this forum, the fish there are just hanging on I guess. Not many customers so guys shop is pretty beaten up.
When I was there I saw a tank filled up with fish I think they where like tetras only had zebra like stripes and base was silver blue. All were fighting and chasing each other. I am thinking of buying the smallest one or two. So that they may survive.
I read that platys go with betta. It maybe my tank size also that the platy had flowing tails which made the betta think its another male .

Anyways should I get the small fish? They are half an inch or slightly longer maybe. What say. Also the name of that fish is long and stars with h I guess they where in the tank with tiger watevers.
I am just afraid that they dont nibble mu bettas fins. I really wish I could add some more small fish in the tank.
